Hey guys, Im under my bj42 trying to remove ther= tranny and case. thought I'd ask for a little help. I cant get to the bolts on the front driveshaft because the rear support mount is in the way. So I started to unbolt that. I have the whole thing supported by a jack under the bell housing . Is that ok? I dont want to break the housing with the weight of the tranny and case still on it. Also How do you get the shifter out of the case? Does the starter and clutch cylinder have to come off? I was hoping to leave everything forward of the trans unmolested. Sure would appreciate any help! Tim

yes you can support the assembly at the bell housing just fine.
the shifter is removed by pushing down on the retaining ring and turning 1/4 turn.
the clutch slave and starter does not have to be removed unless you are removing the bellhousing...

Ps. Turn the shift collar counter counter clockwise to remove it. Clockwise puts it back in.

thank you all

Well, I got it out and on the garage floor, now Its got to come apart so I can get both cases rebuilt. hope it goes back in easy. All the info Ive picked up here over the last months is sure gonna help upgrade my cruiser! thanks again! Tim

Glad to hear you got it out. An old input shaft works great for lining up the clutch when you bolt it on. (Full credit to crushers for this idea). It takes a bit of manhandling to get the tranny lined up and in but overall its not too bad..

How did you get the tranny out, did you use a tranny jack?

Transfer case is easy to rebuild. The tranny will be alot of agrivation! The bearings are in TIGHT. I've done two trannys, an H42 in my daughters FJ55 and an H41 in my FJ45LV. I also had my H55 done and the shop doing it has the OEM puller set and they nearly busted the puller getting the bearings out! If the tranny doesn't need work I wouldn't get too excited about taking it apart.

a little more help if you please!

I got the trans transfer assy out using a floor transmission jack that was the easy part. I just got back to it today and have run into another puzzle, there are five bolts holding the units together, four are easy, the fifth looks to be internal . This is a split case I believe , please don't tell me I have to take it apart to get to that fifth bolt. how do I get at it????????????? I want to separate the units but I am not going to do the rebuilding, just don't have the experience or tools to do them. Does removing the rear drive output shaft cover give you access???? Any hel is appreciated Tim

Sorry, I AM going to tell you that on a split case transfer you MUST dismantle the transfer case to remove it. Some of the bolts are behind the idler gears so simply removing the rear cover WON'T do it!

yikes!

I'm gasping for breath, ok in for a penny... Do I need anything special in the way of tools??? Does anyone know of a manual or specific info on how to do the split case??? I tried searching but there didn't seem to be much. the factory manual is kinda vague on details... Also how about putting it back together??? If I havesomeone rebuild it then I have to dis assemble it to re install right?

Its not as bas as it sounds. If you have made it this far, its not too bad. There are actually three bolts that hold the front half of the split case to the tranny.

Get the 84 Chassis manual from birfield.com. Its got a section on how to take apart the t/case. You will find it is much easier to work on if you place the bellhousing upright on the floor and put the tranny in from the top.

Remove the front output flange. Remove the cover over the input shaft (6 bolts on the back half of the case directly behind the tranny.) Remove the large nut in there using an impact (34MM). Remove the bolt, ball, and spring for the 4L mechanism (on the back half of the case). Remove the rear output flange. Remove the tab holding the idler shaft in. Remove the bolts holding the two halves of the case together and it should come apart. You may have to push in on the idler rod (near the centre of the back half of the case) while separating. watch out for falling gears!. All three gearsets should lift out. Ensure you remember how they go back in and keep an eye on the two "washers" on either end of the idler shaft to make sure they don't get lost or forgotten.
