I have a 2004 lx470. It has the towing option and also the POS toyota converter and it feeds power back to the dash, lights, and rear wiper with the truck shut off. Frankly this "feature" irks the s*** out of me.
The stock converter crapped the bed last year, and I do not plan on buying a new one - they are $90 unobtainium pieces of crap.
I looked into getting one from a tundra (2003-2012) - same pinouts, same functionality, same price, same availability.
So here is the twist. I want to reuse the existing toyota wiring harness by removing the connector from the fried converter and soldering the wires on the new converter (hoppy HD unit) to it and plugging the new converter into the existing harnes. I will run new power right off the battery to avoid sending power back to the dash.
This should work shouldn't it? My main concerns are the power and the trailer brake. I have not traced out the wiring in the EWD, but I dont think there would be any issues. I want to reuse the existing harness and connector because i dont like cutting into a stock harness.
I tried to search on this but found nothing. Has anyone else done this? Does it seem like a good idea?
