How much winch do you really need for a trailer?? I'm going to grab a winch for my trailers and was wondering how much is really needed..

I've hauled trucks on to a trailer with 3k RZR winch without much drama. I know wreckers use some pretty hefty hydraulic winches, however I do not plan on dragging the truck on to the wood deck of my trailer.

I want an 8K ish range winch, but suspect that a 6K would do as well.

This will be primarily for winching dead vehicles on to the trailer (obviously)

I mean a brand new imported 8000ib. can be had for like 350 with steel wire cable...as long as the mount system on the trailer can handle the load (or be beefed up)....why not just err on the side of caution and get something with enough ass (plus some) to do what you want?

hell...you can probably find a used one in that area for $200

just thinking out loud...

Agreed, winches have come down significantly. However, if I can get one for $150 instead of $350 that works just as well...

I'm more curious to see how many people have actually stalled winches out rolling a truck on to a trailer..

If you're rolling a vehicle with fully inflated tires onto a trailer, you really don't need much "ooomph" to get the job done. The issues start when you have flat (or no) tires, busted axle, and such...

Id get one in the 8 k range. Also depends on your deck height and ramps. 2 ft high deck, short ramps with angle iron crossers can take quite bit of pulling power to pull up a heavy truck. Also the bigger winch should last longer and be used for other stuff as well.

Mace,

This is the one I use, it's in a cradle and a 2 inch reciever. The winch is a warn, XD9000i.

On the ramp end, I mounted a set of rollers, to help drag anything up. Works great.

With the cradle, I can move the winch around to different vehicles, when needed.
