I have a single axle trailer today that has some nice sides on it and is 75-76" wide in inner dimensions. The '85 4Runner is 72" wide at the outsides of the tires. I need to check on my axle and see if it will handle the weight.

I am also considering just selling it and getting a tandem axle. The upside there is that I would get 4 tires vs 2 if I should have a blow out etc. Also may pick up brakes which my current trailer does not have.

I am not sure I want to pull 4K+ lbs of stuff without trailer brakes?? Would be pulling with the V8 2004 4Runner.

What Colin said... you want brakes and the four wheels. Buddy picked up one off clist for about 1k with 12k rating.

If you want to buy the "forever trailer", find one with 6k or more axles. That way you can haul about 10k of weight max (2k trailer weight). I have had mine for 12 years, and it has hauled everything and anything. Been to Canada and back, and probably 12 other states.

Surge brakes are great and you have no other wiring, but I think they are no longer legal to manufacture or use commercially... something like that.

Unless your planning on a 2500 Truck wouldn't get anything more than a utility 7k trailer. It will be much more
User friendly for your every day and handle most midsize vehicle

I have a pj it's built like 12k with metal deck but only 7k axles. I haven't seen used trailers loose value in my life time. No need to get new it's all about maintenance. Bearings grease and tires.

Funny stuff.

Guy in lexington that has a cool first name and a pretty cool truck that used to belong to one heck of a guy.

Does this said person jump out of FJ40s like half cat & half superman?

I get a D- for awareness on this one :)

Yeah. That's the guy.

The issue of towing is not getting up to speed, rather, it is stopping. Having said that, I would look into the specs of both your 4runner and Lexus. I would bet the Lexus is going to be better at towing all the stuff that you need. My understanding is that the Lexus is the same platform as a 100 series Land Cruiser?...Please correct me if I am wrong. If this is the case, it has a beefier tranny, bigger brakes and suspension goodies to accommodate your towing needs better than that of your 4runner.

My Sherpa II trailer has electric brakes, albeit overkill, it is peace of mind...

I know that my Tundra shares many parts as the 200 Land Cruiser from tranny to brakes to suspension. I upgraded even more since I have had my rig. It is almost done with my build. Don't make the mistake that I made by bringing EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN...be smarter than me and carefully consider all that you are taking and take only what you need.

Lets get a cup of coffee and we can talk more about your plans.

Regards,

BWJ

Yea want the ebrakes and two axles. I sold my single axle trailer to my Uncle this weekend and am in the market for a tandem now :) Some of the tandems have 4 wheel brakes and some have 2 wheel brakes.

The believe the following all share the same V8 drive train except some have the VVTI 4.7L (some have V6 options, too):
2005-07 Sequoia
2005-2006 Tundra
2003-2009 4Runner
1998-2007 LX470
2003-2009 GX470

Earlier Sequoia and Tundra had the same tranny as the 3rd Gen 4runner, the A340.

My 4Runner has the heaviest OME coils in the back - - so good for an expedition trailer - ok for some other towing. The 5 speed temperature level towing is so much more consistent than the A340 on the 3rd gen. That tranny would spike up to over 200 degrees and really worry me just when loaded down, let alone towing.

Would love to grab coffee, BWJ!

With two mowers and gear, we will need at least a 16' looks like. That would give me some room on the trailer for storage for trips with the 4Runner, too. I see a lot of 77" widths - sounds like that would be perfect, too.
