Trailer Light Connection Question (1 Viewer)

Hello All
I'm very new here so any and all help is totally appreciated !
I have a BJ42 RHD from Australia. This vehicle has a 7 pin elec.
connector to hook up lights for a trailer. Is there a connector that will convert the 7 pin to a USA 4 Pin connector? Thank you in advance.

Probably just as easy to resplice a 4 pin connector to your wires?

Yes there is an adapter. Should be available at any trailer store or Uhaul outlet. You should also be able to source it from Toyota directly as 100 series cruiser come stock with the 7-pin and are supplied with the adapter to 4-way.

I haven't had much time to look into it except to stop by an auto parts store. They have nothing even close.It's an Ausi part.If I had the plug I could make an adaptor. It is a 7 pin plug but they are not in a circle they go straight across with the middle pin slightly higher than the others. I'll take a pic.

Ah, that kind of 7-pin. I've seen them on older pickups, mine included, but I have no idea if they make an adapter. Hmm...

I lied, never seen a seven pin like that before. You might be better off cutting that one off and rewiring it to a standard "US" 7-pin. They sell 7-pin plugs that have the 7-pin and 4-flat together in the same unit. Available at Tractor Supply and other stores that sell trailer wiring stuff.

Splice in a 4 pin, run a combiner, or check GM, Ford, Toyota, Dodge... they all have the 'trailer option' which is normally a 7 pin that is also supplied with a comverter for 4 pin use. An RV. Trailer supply shop can also solve the problem. Or a marine store... but DON'T go to Kragens or AutoZone - they have poor quality electrical, made in China, junk that is over-priced. The best quality electrics are at good marine shops.

HAD one of those 7 pin flat----not anymore----it's not worth the trouble.

Rewire for a common round plug and use an adapter for anything flat.

www.etrailer.com will have the adapter if its available (not likely). Or they'll have what you need to splice them up.

I like these 7:4 pin sets- no adapters needed for the most common harnesses. No extra work and just a couple more $.

I believe the Australians have separate turn and brake signals as standard for trailer wiring while in the states we use a combined brake/turn signal wiring scheme. Even to splice this in will probably require a "converter" that combines the signal.

The flat plug is one of the standard types here in the land of Oz. We also have two versions of a round connector. All connectors can be either 5 or 7 pin.

Personally I'd never use anything other than the flat 7 pin, I've had no end of trouble with round connectors, never had a problem with the flat one.

That's correct, Australia has never used brake lights as turn indicators either on vehicles or trailers, silly idea. Even American vehicles imported to Oz have to have the brake and turn indicators seperated, turn indicators must be amber in colour. Interestingly, one of the Australian car manufactures here (General Motors Holden) is now exporting some of their vehicles to the US, sold under the Buick badge, and the these have had the lights modified so as the brake light is a turn indicator.

I still don't get it, turn indicators are ment to be amber, brake lights red, the wattage of the globes is very different also. My instinct is to brake if I see a red light on the back of a vehicle, could be interesting if I ever get to the US and drive. Watch out for me on the evening news.
