Can anyone recommend a hitch for a FJ? Anything special needed to install it?

I found out I'm going to have to move to upstate NY around mid next year and am probably going to get a UHAUL trailer to move my stuff.

Brock, you've seen more of the underside of my ride than I have...

Call Corbins hitch shop.

you can buy a factory Toyota for the FJ Cruiser...when you order it make sure they ONLY ship you the TOYOTA built hitch and the bumper facade as it fits higher to body and gives more ground clearance. The plastic facade is cut out for the hitch to sit higher than level your bumper shows now. If you dont specify, they use the DrawTite for the southeastern Toyota group...which is add on and uses same holes in frame but sits about 2 inches lower. If it does not matter then you are golden either way.

It comes with bolts and everything you need and the frame is pre drilled and tapped for the hitch install....so a big freaking wrench and someone to help you hold it up or some jackstands and you are in there. About an hour job.....

Corbin does good work too and are local family...but I would go with the Toyota hitch if it was me....and it was and that is what I did. It is of high quality and like I said gives more ground clearance in rear for departure angle.

None of the pics are linked any more but the text is all there...here is my old FJC before I sold her...maybe you can get some nuggets from my build to use. I think I have most of the pictures that were on there as long as you dont go crazy and want them all or do it in small quantities if you are interested. LOL

much easier than custom fab too.....your frame is pre drilled for rock sliders, trailer hitch, and most skid plates are set up to use other holes predrilled in your frame already...such as BudBuilt in North Carolina.

Good luck...if you need help let me know. The hardest part is taking the rear bumper cover off and putting the new one on if you get the Toyota hitch. If you just take either hitch from the dealer and get the aftermarket...it is even easier.

Toyota said I had to buy a hitch and something else- like $350 with military discount and before a new bumper. Sounds like a rip off. Can you recommend a place- like would TRD (I think thats the name) be a good choice to go to?

Call Jamie at Sparks Toyota. You get a discount.

yep the hitch is around $350....but dont need new bumper only the plastic cover IF YOU get the Toyota brand hitch. If you get the one used as aftermarket replacement by Southeast Toyota there are no extra parts needed...just bolts straight up. Call jamie at SPARKS TRD tell him you frequent this forum and he will set you straight.

Go on the FJCruiser forum (blue forum) as when people put on aftermarket rear bumpers they sell their hitches like I did....or just buy a Warn rear bumper with integrated rear hitch and dont worry about it again.

harness plugs into a pre fitted socket in vehicle harness...you dont have to cut and splice anything. I would go ahead and get it...if it has changed from the one I had then would just do what is needed.

Yay for Toyota Hitch from TRDSparks!!
