Does anyone have an elegant/practical solution to somehow mount the trailer wiring harness on the tow bar so it doesn't dangle by its wires? The closest I found to what I'm looking for is at this site: http://www.hitchcorner.com/trailer_plugs.htm#plugs

But i'm not sure which plug will be the best solution. I do like the one plug that I guess connects to the stock 4 wire and lets you have a 4 wire connector and a 7 wire connector all at once.

I would like to have the harness fixed to the tow bar but at the same time I don't want to have a large ungainly connector. I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Oops - sorry. I didn't notice your signature - you have a stock cruiser? You can't fit a connector there if your spare tire is still in the stock location.

How about buying a Slee rear bumper and tire carrier and then doing my mod? It would be a good excuse. ;)

Connector Choice

Yeah...the spare is a problem. However, I am interested in the crossover you did on the connector. The standard LC wire harness is a 4-wire connector. How did you convert to a 7 wire? Was it a conversion connector that you plugged in the original 4-wire or did you replace the whole 4-wire connector? And if so where did you source your parts?

Thanks!

Adrian

BTW - so far I only trailered bobcat type equipment which used the 4-wire only.

I mounted a seven-pin adapter under the bumper, susceptible to damage but I don't really wheel. I have a plug-n-play adapter from my wiring harness to a four-pin plug, plugged into the seven-pin adapter. A brake controller wire and power feed come from the front of the truck. I bought the brake controller locally, other stuff from e-trailer.

Mounting location

I checked out e-trailer.com very nice. So where did you end up mounting the recepticle on the bumper? Any pics? How is ease of use with how you mounted the recepticle when connecting various trailers?

Thanks!

Adrian

I did this in a hurry when I was working construction. I should probably come up with something more finished. The two valves are for the airbags in the rear coils.

No pic right now, but installer of my 4/7 pin adapter (brand is Hoppy) welded the bracket the adapter cam with in about the same position as Scott's. My airbag valves are just above my adapter. It is more suspect to damage the way it hangs down, but you'll hit the bottom of the hitch about the same time as this set up.

Draw-Tite

I recently installed a Draw-Tite receiver hitch and bought a T1 connector - plug-n-play from factory 4 pin. Currently tucked the dangler behind the bumper - now looking to adapt to 7/9 pin and mount a connector somewhere on the PS of the receiver - where the stock harmess wires come down. Welding something is a maybe but not to keen on the bracket mounts - wish Toyota offered something given this vehicle is a world LEGEND!

Would something like this work for you? When we bought our 80, the previous owner had installed a tow hitch with a nice setup for the connector. It's from Northern Cal, two locations, Rocklin, and Auburn. www.trucksmart.com Here's some pics.

offroadkid - thanks, that looks good. It seems my LC is the only one I've seen with factory wires coming down from the passenger side - so that's where I'll mount it. Question - how is the conncetor attached to the hitch - bracket? And if so, does it stay put or is there play in it. Thx. Tom

It's held on by some BIG tie-straps. It doesn't move around. Here's an under pic.

I wouldn't put anything sticking out under the receiver bar. Sooner or later, it'll get scraped off -even if you don't wheel hard- and tear out a mess of wires with it

Btw, just this weekend I was looking at my trailer hitch and there was rust and stains. Pulled out a satin black rattle can, sprayed some with the hitch still on (held newspaper to protect body) and voila, 2 mins later looks new again....

Thx again. Now time to get creative. As for the satin black rattle can, I noticed the area around the pindle holes could use some touch up - and a tiny bit of surface corrosion/rust is leaking from the left bottom corner hole. Planning on cleaning it up then rust-o-leum/paint?? Then getting plugs to fill holes like the Lexus - or something to that effect - maybe black silicone. As always, much appreciated.

Offroadkid - that looks nice. May have to keep that in mind when I put on my soon to arrive Kaymar bumper. FYI - I did scrape my setup (like ScottM's) when I was at Pismo. Didn't break off, but bent it a little.

Thanks!! This survived Pismo no problem. I know it wouldn't stand-up to some of the departure angles at Moab though!!

Hehehe - well, I'm waiting to see what the Kaymar looks like in something other than a picture, because I have to mount both the trailer wiring and my Airlift valves somethere.
