Hey Guys,

Like Dan mentioned at the last CC meeting, he and I are putting together a parts order from:
http://www.trail-gear.com/

They have some good quality sliders for a great deal.

I'll take care of organizing who wants what (please email me, cg1@telus.net or call 604-376-3575). Dan will take care of all the ordering/shipping details.

Check out...http://www.trail-gear.com/rocksliders.html

(USD)

Rock Sliders - 58" Shortbed/4Runner, $135, 120001-1-K
Rock Sliders - 67" 84-88 Xtra-Cab, $140, 120002-1-K
Rock Sliders - 78" 88-04 Xtra-Cab, $145, 120003-1-K

NOTE - 67" sliders fit a 60 or 80 series

Rock Bars are a great way of protecting the rocker panels of your pickup or 4Runner. Made from 1 3/4" X .120 round HREW tubing. Legs can be be cut to length to allow for different mounting positions.

Heavy duty design can take a pounding from the rocks while keeping body damage to a minimum. Strong enough to take the entire weight of the truck. A high-lift jack can be used anywhere along it's length for repositioning of rig or axle servicing. Sold in pairs. Unpainted steel surface. 58" & 67" lengths include 6 frame legs. 78" length includes 8 frame legs. We recommend painting bars after installation.Weld mount, or gussets availalbe for extra cost.

Our gusset kits include plates for the frame and triangle corner gussets. Plate welds to frame and rock slider welds to plate. Kits are made from 3/16" plate steel. 58" and 67" kits contain 6 plates and 6 gussets. 78" kit includes 8 plates and 8 gussets.

Rock Slider Mounting 6 leg Kit $39, 120007-1-K
Rock Slider Mounting 8 leg Kit $49, 120008-1-K

Looks like the plates could also bolt up to the frame if you don't want to weld them?

Sign me up for a set of 67' with the gusset set.

Once they are here, how about a group welding / powdercoating buy? Might get a better deal that way....

Good idea. Anybody suggest a powder-coater?

you guys are putting those on your hdj81s? I guess you have no cats to protect, but even so those plates don't look big enough for the frame and overall the arms and gussets look pretty borderline strength wise to me. i'm no expert so you guys might want to consider starting up a thread in the 80 section and get some input before you commit as there are some much more knowledgeable than me folks there. so far as i know nobody has succeeded so far in finding a super cheap slider solution for 80s. there is no substitute for heft. if anyone wants to see hanna 80- series sliders to compare I have a set here in vcr or take a look at www.hannaquality.com. a ton more money but i am guessing that if you don't need the cat protectors he could make them cheaper. they mount up on triangular angle iron arms to the frame.

if you look at the pic the legs arnt welded on yet. So the slider can be mounted at any angle. The material is 120 HREW . Strong enough for any of the guys in the club. As for paint, Im just gonna spray mine. The mounting kit may not work as they are for a mini truck frame. Measure you 80 series frame (hieght) and Ill tell you if it will work.

the 80 frame is roughly 6" x 2.5" and it's at least 9" out to the slider main support beam. if that is 1.75" tube for the arms/outriggers in the photos then those plates are clearly not big enough and it looks like they use 3/8" hardware from the holes where I would say even as a layperson that is clearly too skinny. i am worried about the 1/2" hardware on mine.

here is a recent thread showing trail damage to a slee slider with boxed and gusseted 3/16" outriggers. https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=90472&highlight=straighten+slider

for hanna sliders, the main slider beam is a 3"x4" 3/16" boxed beam, not a tube. slee uses a 2x4 3/16" box (see photo below) and the new metaltech sliders are even beefier. according to the hanna website the hanna outer tube is DOM 2" x .120 so that is beefier than your main support and slee uses dom tube for the outer tube too. The hanna outrigger arms are 1/4" triangles with 3/16" gussets.

I do not know anyone who has successfully used a tube for the main support for an 80 slider although I'm not saying it's impossible. just that a lot of fab people knowledgeable about these trucks have heard the requests for cheaper sliders and concluded it is not possible. having landed hard on my sliders i agree with them.

i don't want to sound like i know it all, just that i did a fair bit of research before buying sliders and everything I've heard suggests those you propose may be too light and so i respectfully suggest you go to the 80 board and ask for some advice before going this route. a number have made homemade sliders or adapted weldons so they can tell you if you are good to go or not. A loaded armoured 80 is 6,000 lbs+.

no wonder it broke, look at that crappy mounting hardware. weld it and be done with it

agreed. slee uses 7/16" u bolts. hanna uses 1/2" u bolts. I think that is a weak point but i am not willing to weld onto my frame and I don't think that is what buckled that outrigger. welding makes it stronger but can it compensate for the lack of bracing on those tube outriggers and can those tubes take a hard hit when 6000 lbs lands on a pointy rock? I'm no engineer so maybe they are good enough.

I've no idea what the trailgear stuff is like, so will stay out of that debate. I can say that I know Ken, and not only are his products stand up, he is too.

Mine will be welded on, big ass gussets added and spraypainted. All this for under $200, ya I think im on the right track. If you guys are worried Ill get the first set, beat the fxxx outa my truck anf you can be the judge.

I have faith in you Dan, I think they will stand up to your abuse, but I think that you will still find ways to dent your truck!:D

I think for the $ they well do just fine and PS as DAN says weld the f*&^***^% and be dun! MY 2C... and hi ALL

semlin is right, the mounting kit will NOT work, but hey all it is, is a piece of 3/16 plate with a bend and 4 holes. easy stuff to make.

did anyone measure 70 series rockers yet?

Just went out and measured on the BJ74...62" or thereabouts.

Take 10"-12" off for a BJ70?
