trading in my 07 Fj for an 03 lexus lx270. i love the fj and hope that i don't have to sell it, but it is starting to be in inconvenient already specially the rear doors. big toyota guy plus the land cruiser has been my dream car ever since. the thought of a go anywhere car built like a tank is the major attracting factor. plus the space and 8 seater for frequent family visitor from the home land was mandatory.

my choices and reasons positive and negative
4runner 09 or 11-(too many around and kind of expensive) looks good though
gx470 05-06 was my 2nd option but it most of the drivers are moms/wives, and lack of aftermarket parts
highlander -too many cabs

what are your thoughts?

Two words.. Do it (as long as the LX470 checks out nice) :)

I'd likely do it too. Dunno if I'd trade in the FJC though, they seem to fetch a decent price these days ever since discontinued.

I did that 4 years ago - traded in my 2007 for a 2006 Land Cruiser. While you can typically (not always) sell a car/truck for more than you can get as a trade-in, couple things to consider...
- Dealers can sell it for more; they just can. So, you may get closer to your retail (lower than theirs) and a bit higher than pure wholesale/trade-in
- When you trade a car in, you reduce the capital cost - the amount used to calculate the sales tax on you're new car. So, if the LX is $25,000 and your FJC is worth $18,000, your tax base is $7,000 - that's real money and can make up for some of the "loss" of getting only trade-in money.
- it's easier... a whole lot easier. Selling a car out of the driveway can be a pain in the ass. Meeting people, dealing with them getting financing...

Best of both works is to find a dealer that will do an in & out trade for you. But you have to find a buyer in that event.
