2000 UZJ, pissin down rain today, the CEL, VSC and Trac lights all came on, the 100 went ino limp mode, drove it home. Checked out some stuff under the hood, started it back up, lights all still on but it ran just great.

came back, read about the TBS here, went back out......all lights off and it runs normal, drove it for 30 mins with no issues.

Sooooooooooooo do I just go ahead and replace the TPS and APPS or may this problem never come back? I have an apointment with the dealer(I aint working on the 100) monday morning but to be honest I really would rather not spend $500 if its a problem thats not coming back......but then again I really dont like unknown issues hanging over my head.

Didnt look to see if the TB was gunked up or not.....its crappy out.

Oh and maybe its just a bizare coincidence but this happened about 10 mins after I filled up(pretty much on empty) with premium(costco).....and I normaly(aways actaully) run mid grade(Chevron).....almost sure it not related but thought I would toss it out there...

your the landcruiser pimp, you should know what to do with your hoes. There are people that go 6+months without the problem surfacing again, but where are you going to be in 6months when it shows up? Somewhere really bad in the stix? Im not saying to replace it, but not saying to let it go. Basically im helping you be even more indecisive. If you have the funds for the PM, I would do it.

I know I know.......but its just one of those things.......if it did it more than once or didn't go back to normal I would be on it like stink on chit.......hoping I am blessed with the self fixxin 100 series ;)

but then again....I hate that little voice in the back of my head telling me it can crap out anytime......

funds yes.....but had "something" else in mind that really is alot more fun than a sensor and a few hours at the dealer..;)

pulled the stored coded today, P1121 APPS range/performance problem, no other codes, all lights off......

drove 100 miles today, ran perfect, think I am just gonna wait untill it does it again.

still odd it happened right after a tank of premium from Costco......no more premium for me ;)

Mine has tripped a total of three times in the 57k i've owned the truck. Twice when cold (~10 deg f, once at about 40 degrees). Each time it was fixed with a shut down and restart. So I' haven't done anything with it.

Pimp - if you are going to do it yourself then I say go for it but if you are taking it to the dealer then who knows what will be broken when it comes back.

It you feel the need to take some action without getting extreme how about checking all the electrical connections and putting them back together with a dielectric grease for corrosion and water protection. Add a TB cleaning for good measure then see if it comes back.

The gas is not related and you know it. Testing the new gas by flooring it repeatedly could possibly be related.

my only thought on the gas was that I have never(expect 1-2 times 4 years ago) run anything but mid grade, when I filled up sat with premium the tank was almost empty, then I just drove 5 mins to the office and shut it off, my "theory" was I restarted it the computer now saw something it hadn't seen or was use to and did something funky as it had not had time to learn the new gas.........hey give a guy his "theory" :)

I will look at some stuff under the hood.

never had a sensor go bad on any of my rigs(that have a computer) even on my old non computer Cruisers had more than 1 BSV go bad.

talking to my buddies wife yesterday, her 2001 did the same thing a month ago, been fine sense

talked to service and parts today, parts has never sold the APPS, he said he has seen ethonal gas to some wierd stuff before, so its possible. Service said, wait untill it happens again, but he said the TPS is the one they see go out.

wait and see :)

I just replaced the APPS on my 1998 this last weekend. The mechanic I used has seen the problem several times. Part is kinda pricy (about $275), but it is a:banana: job. Took about 20 minutes.

I am in the same situation. This happened when I first bought the truck around 60k it just now happened again yesterday around 158k. For me, both times were in cooler weather (AZ cool = 50F) and both times the vehicle first operated normally and then started going really slow with only a little acceleration with full throttle. After a restart, it recovered from the "limp mode" but the VSC and Trac lights were on. They eventually turned off after a few cycles of "normal"operation.

well its still hasn't done it again.......but a o2 sensor went out.......same tank of gas, replaced the O2 yesterday, this is the 2nd one(same as the Lx470 we have, done both fronts, both within a year of each other)

You sure about that? My understanding is that the TPS is a  job, accessible from the outside, but the APPS is a :banana::banana: job, requiring the removal of the throttle body because it is internal. Mine cost about $700 total at the dealer, with a TB cleaning as well.

The APPS does not require removal of the throttle body...just the air intake assembly to access the three screws that the APPS to the throttle body. Rusty_tlc is faced with this same issue (APPS code) right now...weird...so cool/cold weather initiates it??!!

Sooo ... Should I be glad it doesn`t get cold here ? ;)

Damn.. You guys are making me wonder how I manage to drive my 100 like hell weekly rather than fix it all the time... did I just get a good one, or is something wrong and I just dont know it ? !

If this is living in denial... then I`m living it firsthand.

Ok, I must be honest with you... I`m starting to feel like I cant trust my Cruiser anymore and I dont want to take it anywhere beyond my cell phone coverage area...

WTF ? .. The "spare parts to carry" list is beginning to look like a LandRovers.. Should I trade it in on a new Tacoma and get some peace of mind back or what ?

yeah but the 100's seldom leave you dead in the water, even when in limp mode it moves, then turn off/on and runs fine, O2 sensors......can fix whenever they dont effect how it drives or runs.

Not so when the APPS sensor goes as rusty's. Rusty_tlc did have a good thought about this: Since the APPS is being controlled by the accelerator pedal shouldn't the cruise control function as a crude throttle in an emergency situation such as when the APPS goes south? Good question: Next one that has their APPS go south give it a try and report back ;)...please :D.

So you think or do you know the new Tacoma is a totally reliable rig? I think my issues of late are just the culmination of how hard I use my rig off-road. It, for now, is my DD too...which exacerbates keeping the rig PM'd  When I had a DD it didn't seem so bad...I need to go back to that model .

But after seeing rusty's debilitated to the point of not being to power itself anywhere...will cause me to order the APPS for the tool box. If this part went bad on any number of the remote places I travel, sometimes alone, it would not be fun. Better to know the liability than be unpleasantly surprised by it! And some of this crap we are faced to deal with (APPS, TPS, front diff) is simply because IMO Toyota passed the buck on official (and costly!) formal recall. Like Christo said: Jeez, GM issues a recall for the tail gate cables on their trucks and Toyota can't make right on APPS, TPS and front diff issues??!!

Question: Didn't the LC go with a drive by wire set-up on the later models (year?). If so wouldn't this eliminate the need for the APPS altogether?
