Does anyone in town work on split rims? I know they are considered dangerous, but I have a set that I'd like to have the tires dismounted from. Any help would be appreciated...I hear that the normal tire shops won't touch them.

Dismounting shouldn't be any problem; it's inflating them (and assembling them correctly) that's dangerous.

Agreed. Also, some shops are overly cautious by corporate decree.
There is no danger in taking the tire off, just a real PITA to break the bead on an old tire and get it loose from the rim. Tire shops use 10lb sledge hammers with pointed pick-ax style side to do this. Prepare with pry-bars, 2 and 10 lb hammers, and an energy bar prior.
I've had my splits on my M101 trailer worked on, and a truck tire company could not make one of em work. Paid a hispanic guy from craigslist $20 (this was about 8 years ago) and he came and mounted one in the driveway, after wrapping with a chain in case it let loose.
Fast forward to last year and I got a flat on one and did it in my driveway with the same chain technique. For mounting, you need to get a self fastening air chuck so that you can fasten it and get about 20 feet away from the tire to start inflating in case the ring blows. Google some videos, it can get real hairy like C4 quick.

I dont think they are dangerous if you know what you are doing and wrap them with a logging chain while filling up from a distance. Search and you shall find lots on them and see how to do it right.
