Have you thought about a carputer? Does GPS navigation but also MP3's, radio, TV, movies, internet, OBDII, etc,

Cost would be equal or less but requires more time for initial install, maintenance would also be higher but at least you can maintain it unlike the OEM systems

Not for everyone

I would not hard mount crap like that in the truck. Technology constantly changes, so keep it portable. Otherwise, in a few years you'll be ripping the frickin thing back out anyway.

I have looked into it breifly but have made no measurements.. I added the 2004 Grand Cherokee Nav radio to my 03 Ram truck and it bolted/plugged right in. I am all for factory nav, and the price will come down. People were trying to get 1500.00 for the Jeep nav radio and I paid 680.00 on eBay. When it gets down there reasonable, I will buy. In the mean time, I will be looking for someone who has one and pull it for measuring and wiring compatability. I will post my findings when available.

Yeah, there's another thread over in Passatland.. this guy did a flip-up screen from a single din unit, pretty trick stuff. http://www.clubb5.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=82861&sid=294ba2bfe98c5a673de53dc22eef1714

What nice about the audi unit (for the DIYer's) was the price.

Touch screen $200
Computer $120
Hard drive $60
Memory $30

But you do need to be familiar with drivers and such. A little VB programming doesn't hurt either.

Depending on what you want to do this unit can reach $1000 pretty quickly, USB devices and SW. but it can do anything that you can think of.

BTW the audi guy checks his e-mail and searches the web with his mobile edge phone while driving down the road, in fact I think he runs his whole office out of his car.
I wonder if he has a badet' in his back seat?

This site offers OEM Toyota navigation system retrofit for many Toyota models. Has anyone investigated one of these as a replacement for the stock 80 radio?

John

The site says nothing about Landcruisers of any vintage.

The biggest question for me is does it do topo, and whose?

If you want topo I think you'll find it easier to build your own carputer than to find someone else and $$$$$ for it.
