Hi All, Trying to find clarity here on transmissions and hoping someone may have some knowledge to help. I have a 93 Toyota Dyna BU70 with a M150 trans. When I try to find information on this transmission, there is only one forum post here from 2010 that even has that number included. However when I search for H150, a lot of results pop up. The M transmission series isn't even on the Wikipedia list. Perusing the forums, it seems there is some overlap between the two series and compatibility. Are the M series and H series the same? If not, is the bell housing / tail housing the same between model numbers(M50 & H50, M151 & H151, etc)? If they are not the same, what's the difference? I am prepping for a 4x4 swap, and looking for information that may be helpful with my transfer case options and selection. Thanks!

going to bump here, anyone have the slightest bit of knowledge to share?

Try googling aisin transmissions.

They have different model designations than what toyota uses, but you may find some clues

Care to offer more advice than googling? I’m pretty well versed in how to find information. Nothing has led me down an Aisin path as of yet.

Is your Dyna 2wd? You're converting it to 4wd?

Post up the VIN for your one, or use it to search toyodiy or partsouq etc. Find part numbers for gearbox, bell housing, radiologist etc.

Do a search on toyodiy, partsouq etc for a 4wd version of the same year, same engine. Do the same, check part numbers.

Toyodiy has a parts cross-reference function. Once you identify a part number, you can search for all other vehicles the same part was used in.

I found Aisin transmissions parts catalogues images that could be helpful to compare one box to another, see if they are the same series Not much beyond that.
Also didn't go down a rabbit hole looking. I'll leave that to you

Not a complete list. It only shows stuff currently in production as of 2009.

This combined with Toyodiy parts cross reference, and a search through various models of Dyna will most likely answer your questions regarding housing interchangeability

Thanks for the response. After poking around some FB groups and getting a repair manual, it appears that the M and H series trans have quite a bit of overlap. They have the same internals and similar dimensions. The M series has a cast steel housing, the H has a cast aluminum housing. They have different bell housing styles as well.

For me and my 4x4 project, I’ll likely use a divorced case as I want to keep this transmission. I’m not sure what I’ll do for engine as of yet. Either turbo mine or potentially swap in a 1HDT if budget allows. I’ll be installing Dana 60 and 70 axles underneath.

Thanks for the help.

Interested in the bellhousing patterns for the M150 vs the H150, looking for a bellhousing that may bolt the H150 to a 15BF engine.
I see from the Aisin catalogue AM5 is the M series, AH1# fitted to the dyna could have a H series (AH5) landcruiser gearbox bolted to the housing? Bellhousing looks shorter but some dynas had a two piece housing.

So after some googling and checking engine and gearbox combos on the Toyota epc l found a H260 6 speed fitted to a 15BFTE engine. I’m hoping this will bolt upto a H15# box and I’ll be able to run it behind a 15B. bsweaty l don’t think the M series and H series share the same bolt patterns as there is a company that makes an adapter to use the H15# series box to the B engines using the M bellhousing. The H50 could be replaced by the H55 4wd box but would need the correct input shaft and bellhousing for your engine.

following the advice of @mudgudgeon, I made it pretty far. it does appear to be the Aisin AM5 I have in my van the BU70, listed as the Toyota M150 Transmission. the BU72 Dyna of the same year has what Toyota calls the M134a, and from appearance it looks to be the exact same transmission, it just so happens to have a 4x4 transfer case attached to the back of it. see attached photos. does anyone recognize this transfer case? toyota part number: 36110-36021. I'd love to be able to get some info and see if it'll bolt up.

any info or advice is always appreciated, thank you so much!
