Hello all,
I'm looking to rebuild a mechanical winch and I'm wondering how to take it apart. Does anyone have a manual?
Also, I'm thinking of installing the winch so the cable comes out from the bottom instead of the top. Does this sound feasible?
I'm a bit worried that the front of the winch housing might not be strong enough to handle the force from the worm gear.
What are your thoughts?

Picture of said winch?

I managed to completely disassemble the winch. I replaced the bearings in the worm gear, but now there are too many shims (1,3mm), and there's too much play. With a 0.5mm shim, it's too tight, and with a 0.75mm shim, it's slightly loose. Should I leave a slight play?
My other initial question was about the possibility of reversing the cable direction. O riginally, the cable pulls from the top, but I want it to pull from the bottom. This means the worm gear pushes on the bottom (circled in blue), but it seems more delicate compared to the cover side. What do you think?

There must be some play !
Bitter more they to tight .
About THE cable rolling side , Leave it on THE top , so you can see how it is winding on THE drum.

Here I am again, now I have to decide whether to cut the bumper or build a frame over the bumper. The easiest and most beautiful thing in my opinion is to cut the bumper and put a synthetic cable hawse guide.
The red mark is exactly the position in axis of the cable on the drum pulled from below. If I made a frame above the bumper it should be 12-15 cm high, like the original 40 series one.
The problem is whether the winch can work in reverse.

From a mechanical point of view the winch can work in reverse .
But as said above ,it is better that the cable rolls on top of the drum, not under.
there is also another topic to consider , that is the drive shaft line .
if you lower the winch , the shaft will be too low ! that is not good .
also the worm gear case in the winch will be very low , not good .
at least on the toyota 40 .
other toyota , 70-80 -100 can accept the winch between the frame .
these are my 2 cents

The drive shaft is exactly in the same place as the original one on the 40.
I don't understand why it's better if it wraps from above the drum.
My fear is that the aluminum winch casing is not made to work in reverse.

If you open the alluminium case you will find a big bronze gear AND a steel worm gear .
They can work either way with no problem .
As said above, THE rope is better If you see how it is rolling up.
You may correct it with a heavy stick, don’t EVER use hands.
This winch will not stop 🛑
It will crunch every things that is it’s way.
And it is not so handy /quick to manovre.
