Hey guys, looking at buying a newer Tacoma or Tundra for camper towing. I know the Tundra can get it done, but how well will the 04 and newer Tacoma do?
I'm looking at the Tacoma simply because they are everywhere and Tundras are less plentiful.
P.S. I would get a double cab in either case

I have a 07' Taco w/ the 4.0L V-6 and it is rated @ 6500 lbs tow rating(I have the 6 spd man, if that makes any dif). I towed a pop up camper from the central valley of CA to Yosemite. It was packed w/stuff and the bed was loaded w/5 days of fire wood, and 2 marine size ice chests, and I could haul ass up the Mntn. I have also checked w/the local RV dealer, and I could haul a JayCo Featherlight 23 footer. I was informed that you should select an RV that is 1000 to 1200 lbs less than what your tow rating is, never owend one but thats all the info I have. Good Luck

If you buy the Tacoma, get the factory tow package. Well worth the extra $. You get the tranny cooler, oil cooler, larger alternator, and 7 pin wiring.

I pull a Fleetwood Evolution E-1 Tent Trailer, about 3300 lbs wet with my '09 DC TRD Off-Road, and I don't even know it's there.

Compared to your 80's, I think you'll be impressed with the Tacoma's pulling power. But make no mistake, its not a V8/full size.

x2 on the tow package. You might still consider an additional aux tranny cooler if you pull a lot.

if you are towing alot get the tundra, the extra weight will keep you from swapping ends when you brake going downhill.
