Gday guys,

i have a quick question, but the question may raise more questions than answers!!!

Im at a point where ill be buying a track car to quench my motorsport bug, however i have grown very attached to my Bundera. Its an 86 Bundera, with the petrol 22r.

So my question, how much with my rig be able to tow, and will it be able to pull it all up a hill haha.

The track car will weight about 1200kg, trailer maybe 400kg???

Im away with work so dont have access to check the car manuals. I would like to do it safely too, does anyone know the towing weight and rules in NSW Australia?

Hopfully i wont have to sell it and buy a ute or something.

I think the GVM might be somewhere between 1400-2000kg???

Cheers guys

I tow a 1300kg caravan with electric brakes with my LJ78, with an extra 400kg's payload in the vehicle. The LJ78 has a longer wheel base, and better brakes than the RJ70. Also, I've done a lot of work to my engine such that it's producing about 90kw power and about 300Nm torque. I can tell you that I would not be comfortable towing any more than this with this setup. Landcruiser's are just plain not built to be comfortable easy tow vehicles.

The RJ70 being lighter, short wheel base, and a small gas engine would be pushed very hard and quite possibly unsafe to pull 1600kg. Personally I would not do it. Weight of the RJ70 is probably around 1600-1700kgs or so stock configuration.

You will be able to tow 1.5 x your vehicle mass legally with trailer brakes if you can not find any info from the manufacturer but please check 1st.
You can not tow more than the tow hitch is rated for.
You can get up any hill using the gears and a mix of patience but I wouldnt be towing long distances in a Bundera.
They are too short and big trailers will push/pull them around.
National towing regs here

Thanks for your imput fellers. For long trips is have the missus MY12.5 VE SSV Wagon for that!! however would not really like to be using it too much.

why do you say you wouldnt like to tow long distances?

one thing im worried about is the car and trailer starting to fishtail then loose control. i remember seeing this happening as a kid with a triton ute towing a magna on a trailer, didnt end well! Im guessing this has to do with speed?

also good idea with the brakes, ill be shopping for a braked trailer.

i think its looking like i might have to get a new tow rig!!!! dont really want to sell the bundera! but i also want to feel safe when towing. would be alot of money down the drain if something was to happen

You asked the question, then answered it yourself. It will be ok at slow speeds but at higher speeds if you hit a few dips in the road on a bend ,the trailer can lift the rear wheels of the Bundera off the ground and jack knife the whole lot.
Its to do with the amount of weight on the rear axle and to some extent ,the length of the towing vehicle.
Even if you can overcome that ,you still have the underpowered engine..
Having roadtrains sitting on your ass up a big hill when you cant do the speed limit is not fun.

The SWB and high centre of gravity will give you a rough ride, its a case of the tail wagging the dog.

My brother used to tow an aluminium dinghy with a 10hp outboard with a Bundera when he went fishing and he thought it about perfect.

The best you can do is have a trial run and see how it goes

RJ70 towing

Hi gents
For the last 11 years i have a bundera with a 7 mg engine and regualary towed 2500 kg ( the tow capacity of a bundera ) consisting of a car trailer and car . I sit on the limits no problems ,sure my kdj78 tows better but you can still use a Bundy .
A interesting note is the new shortwheelbase Prado has 3 ton towing capacity and the long wheelbase 2.5 ton , go figure.
Taking care you will have no problems except the fuel bill of a 22 r at 20 plus litresper hundred.
I can say tho when I towed a 3.5 ton spider lift a short distance with my Bundy that was dangerous and would not do it again .

7mg engine has a lot more grunt than a 22R and would tow easier. The biggest issue is the trailer wagging the bundera.

I would not do it it would be a potential ticking time bomb one wrong bump on the road and you would be a passenger

yep, thats what i was thinking. i guess i knew the answer all along but just have grown attached to my Bundy.

Guess its time for a ute or maybe an 80 series.

Thanks for all the replys guys, have sorted the issue for me!
