can you tow two trailers at once? I have 2 m101 canadian trailers, one i need to deliver the other i need to pick up large heavy machine in the same area is it legal? possible? ect looking at about 8 hour drive

My friend pulls is fifth wheel and a flat bed trailer behind his truck, but he has a Class A drivers license. This is in Ca.

Tandem towing is illegal in most states, the exception being a 5th wheel. I believe towing behind a 5er is legal throughout the U.S.

I have done this for a very short distance and let me tell you it is a wild ride.

wild ride why? Id be towing two m101 trailers behind my 80 series, one of the m101s has electric brakes as well.

Never the less I believe its not doable legally so ill have to go a different route

The bigger question shouldn't be can you but is it safe to?

Always the pessimist Dr. sseaman...lol. :p

I don't think I would enjoy towing two things...there's enough to go wrong with one.

If you don't need to load them with stuff just flip one upside down and strap it to the top of the other with some cribbing in between. You can do it without a machine if you're creative. :D

I see it all the time here: 5th wheel towing an ATV or boat trailer. Ya don't see 'em towing a horse trailer tho....

If the flip don't work, can't you disassemble the non-ebraked trailer & stow it in the ebraked one?

In california you can only pull doubles with a class a license, the length must not exceed 65 feet total, and a few other things like trailer weight and gross vehicle weight, tire ratings and so on. ive investigated this topic before. you should check with your local commercial vehicle law enforcement agency.

You also have to take a written as well as a practical test for pulling Doubles.

And the front trailer has to have a hitch rated for the combined weight of both trailers- usually a 5th wheel or a pintle.

I pull recreational doubles occasionally but never more than a small utility trailer with a quad on it behind a fifth wheel travel trailer.

This is what I have to comply with:

• The lead trailer must be towed by a pin-and-plate fifth-wheel coupling,
mounted over the rear axle of the towing vehicle and fastened to its frame.
• The lead trailer must have two or more axles in tandem.
• The longer trailer must be the lead trailer.
• The hitch connecting the lead trailer and the second trailer must be
fastened to the frame of the lead trailer.
• The total combination length for a towing unit and one or more trailers
shall not exceed 20 metres (~65'-7").
This does not apply to a combination that is being operated for commercial
purposes.

This is legal in my home jurisdiction (Alberta) and any other jurisdiction that has a reciprocity agreement with Alberta such as Ontario.

I towed 2 M101 CDN's home in California by loading one upside down on top of the other.

If I had the ability to do this, I'd go this route.

It might be more worth while to borrow a rent a flat bed to haul the one you are delivering then pick up you equipment for the trip back

One big drawback is if your pulling doubles backing up is...very limited. If you need to put either trailer somewhere specific it becomes impossible. You will end up jacknifing when either trailer is no longer tracking exactly behind the other.
