when r&ring a t/c, new or old after removing a auto trans, does the t/c need priming with atf?

i know someone who did some tranny work on his own car and has noise from the t/c (he says)
but i always thought that the t/c needed filling with ATF before installing.
he did not do this.

thanks

The t/c should always have atf in it before reinstalling. About a quart IIRC.
If new, the lockup needs to be soaked with atf for about 15 minutes prior to reinstallation.

As stated...... Fill the torque converter with 1 qt of transmission fluid before installing. You'll need to be patient - it doesn't take the fluid quickly..........

will the transmission work if the fluid isnt added? having transmission problems at the moment, this could be part of the problem. Sorry for sidetracking, but at least its only a little sidetracking.

If your referring to no fluid in the TC, then I could not really say because I've never experienced that.

But,
The oil is picked up from the strainer and suck to the oil pump then through the valve body and off to the TC and gears.
It would take same time for the TC to fill with oil if it was low.
When the TC does not have any fluid in it tends to not transmit the torque through the tranny.
