Torn inner CV boot, has anyone replaced one on their FJ Cruiser yet? If so how much of a job is it really? I’ve had to replace one on a passenger car and it was the better part of a day with a lift. Also is there a chance that this could be covered by warranty? And how cautious should I be of driving it on the pavement until I do get this fixed?

I think K9 Crazy's brother replaced one on hers. Dan Kunz I think is his name. Heard it was a pain in the rear...

we did one on a Team truck too...not as bad as it sounds, but DO be sure to line up the large OD of the boot properly on the tulip'd side of the shaft....1/6 off and it won't fit properly....

and to do it right, you need the special pliers to clamp the steel rings

it CAN be done without pulling the innermost portion out of the front diff...

figger about 90 minutes to do it....

Thank you, good to know that the whole thing doesn't need to come apart. Any chance that this could be a waranty repair?

don't bet on it....unless you find a defect in the boot itself, it won't be....torn boots are common if you wheel in an area where there are sticks/etc on the trails that can kick up....

we did our repair in Tellico...actually, the IronPigOffRoad guys were nice enuf to take care of it for us....it's a bit of a wrestling match, but not difficult...

Toyota DOES set their front suspension up so it disassembles easy....no need to pull ball joints loose....

Is there any way to get the tech instructions on how to change this particula piece? I called my local dealer and the tech manual is over four hundred bucks!!

Check this link from FJ Cruiser Forums: The *FULL* Factory Service Manual & Wiring Diagrams. I have not used it myself since I don't have an FJ but remember seeing it a few weeks ago. You'll also need to download a .rar viewer here. Hope this helps.

i donno, i just had my cv boots warrantied after 8 years on my 100. Then again it is a lexus and they figure i dont take it offroad maybe....wait no no i brought it to them covered in mud after a trip.

Heck, ask your dealership if they will cover it under warranty......whats the worst they can say? yes? if the said yes its a free job for you and no sweat off your back!

It doesn't necessarily have to be a trail repair unless you are "out there" and plan to remain wheeling for a while. I have limped my FJ home with both CV boots ripped and have seen others do the same. No harm/no foul.

Woody's right, a 90 minute repair if you know what you're doing. Longer (since I'm not that adept) if you're not. The CV boot replacement kit (full dealer cost) is about $20 but you can get them cheaper if you look around.

This is where I learned how to do it :)

Thank you all for the help. One of my good friends talked me into taking it to the dealer "the worse thing they can say is no" and sure enough they did cover the CV. They also said they would cover it once as warranty even if it was lifted, good to know. The down side was they pointed out my "dimpled" transmission pan and they "minor" damage to my trailing arms...
