Too much rust?

Damn, man. Have CarMax ship you a rust free one and get their extended warranty. You have 15 years of all good and no headache/worries.

I bought my low mileage 2004 from CarMax. One owner from Vero Beach, Florida with nearly non-existent rust.

Keep in mind I checked their inventory list every morning for almost 6 months until one show up at the closest Carmax to my home, fortunately.

If you're patient, you can have them ship you a LC from down south to your closest CarMax dealer when one pops up on their inventory.

I wouldn't want that much rust. Some of it is indeed "surface rust" but there is quite a bit of "roach rust" on that thing too. I definitely would factor that rust into my offer heavily.

I offered them $3k less than asking price...we shall see if they understand my reasoning and want to get rid of it. In a weird way, I'm hoping they say no. I'm trying to balance my want for another land cruiser against the faults of the truck.

doesnt look that bad from here... Id more worry about the liftgate rust than that minor surface frame stuff. Scrub it with a red scotch and por15 that shizz... all good for few years then do it again. I hate body rust anywhere, that kind of rust is irritating and hard to fix yourself.. Ill do mechanics all day, but body work yea nope.

The only concern is that tailgate...but too much? No. My 07 FJ has more than that. If you are used to it, you will KNOW it WILL cause some headaches...you will be snapping bolt heads off here and there. Sucks, yes...but it isnt always a deal breaker. If you can score it for a reduced price, by all means grab it and enjoy it.

On the other hand, you are down in GA?...you have access to rust-free (or mostly) trucks down there!. Very fortunate for that. Sure I would love to shop the south for my next rig, but it just isnt that easy thus living, up north, we tend to buy from up here.

Walk away. That is the rust you can see and typical of any 5-7 year old CT truck. There will be rust beginning in the rear well leading and trailing bottom edge under the seam sealer. By the time it bubbles or falls off you're looking at a fairly serious repair rotting from the seam out. Front rocker there is a sheet metal reinforcement behind the running board plastic. The drain hole will plug and that piece and inner rocker will rot.
Just did these repairs (I ignored the visible tailgate rust) again for the second time this weekend on a religiously waxoyled '02. Mine has no visible rust underneath, but a damn sight more rot than my 30 to 50 year old cruisers from dry areas.

Thanks for all the advice. I offered them a lower number based on the rust and they said no. I'm kind of glad they did. The search continues...

^ One will pop up locally when you least expect it. That tailgate rust was typical of LC's in the New England area. I looked at an '06 in beautiful condition with only 50K miles for $30K and the tail gate looked like that. The salesman swore the rig had zero rust over the phone lol. When he saw the tailgate he was apologetic, but suddenly willing to drop the price $2K. I walked more because of the price than the rust.

When I did find my LC, it too had some tailgate rust, but not nearly as bad as one I looked at that spent its life on Nantucket! Mine spent the majority of it's life in CA so it's better than some New England trucks, but a few years on the ocean in Newport did the inevitable.

As many have said here, I wouldn't shy away from an LC with this kind of rust if you live in the snow belt. Even a beautiful dry CA truck is going to look like that after one Winter here. And I am absolutely going to use my LC in the Winter - that's why I bought it :)
