My dad recently passed away and left me his 2001 Land Cruiser. We were starting to make plans on making it more of an excursion vehicle where we can drive it on to the beach or go camping in Uwharrie. I do not plan on selling the LC, but I am going to take on the project.
I am very new to these vehicles. The LC has 204000 and runs like a champ and he had owned it for 4 years. I helped my dad put on the Iron Man front bumper, change out the front rotors and pads, and refurbish the leather. I don't really know where to start with this project but thinking about new tires and rock sliders that way I feel better taking it off road. I use to own many VW camper buses, I may turn it into a vehicle that has the capability to sleep inside and a few other amenities for camping.
I am glad to see that there is a great community here and I hope to be adding to this as I keep on working on the LC.

Sorry to hear about your dad. The land cruiser is a great rig for what you're hoping to do, and it sounds like it will also carry a lot of great memories. You can go just about anywhere with it in stock condition. Lots of options - I always start my land cruisers off with a good round of maintenance and then add all terrain tires in +1 size. From there your options are nearly limitless. I like the Slee products (but don't really have the budget for them). Lots of other great fabricators on here though.

My condolences on your pops passing . Looks like he left you something great . Enjoy ...

Today I took the running boards off, treated the leather and cleaned up the interior. Looking into buying the OME 2.5 lift kit from slee and new all terrain tires. I was nervous about having to change the timing belt but found the sticker and the receipt from when the shop did it 30k miles ago :) .

Sorry to hear about your pops. When my dad passed he handed me down some tools that I still have til this day. I try to use them as he would and remember him in my thoughts.

My thought is that if you are looking to do some beach runs you should start with tires and camping/recovery supplies first. Sliders, lift and the rest of the jazz can come later as you see fit.

Hey thanks man for the condolences.

I agree with your input. I am going to get a quote on some tires tomorrow and start looking into the camping/recovery supplies.
Thanks again

I took everyones advice and bought KO2's for the hundie today. They look awesome. I think the next purchase in a few months is going to be recovery gear and then a lift. Thinking about the EMU 2.5" medium lift kit from SLEE but still up in the air since I don't know how much and how fast I am going to add weight such as a rear bumper , shelves, etc, etc..

Cranked the torsion bars to level the land cruiser a bit. It rides so much better now.
Also took the LC off road for the first time. It was also my first time driving off road so I was kinda scared sh*tless, but the truck did awesome.

My condolences, but I'm glad you're keeping the Land Cruiser spirit alive and I'm sure he is glad too!

When my father passed away in 2000 my mom kept the Beast, even though I was ignorant and wanted her to buy something new at the time! Thank god she didn't listen to me. My truck was handed down to me after I completed my bachelor's degree in 2011 and it's been my daily driver ever since. I've kept mine mostly stock as it was his truck and I want to keep it most like what it was like when he drove it. I know he loved it for the two years he got to drive it (bought new in 1998) and kept raving about certain features that seem mundane nowadays.

Anyway, great looking rig!

Glad to see you are enjoying a vehicle passed down from your Dad. My Dad passed away a few years ago and left me his Miata so I have been bring it up to date with some additional upgrades. It's my daily driver now after selling my 3 series because the Miata knocks out 30mpg and is so much fun since my Dad and lowered it. He had plans on painting it candy apple red which I will finish for him and passed it my son when he turns 16 in a few years.

I just bought my hundy a few months ago and they are very capable vehicles. I seem to have a new car obsession every few years but I have a feeling there will always be a Land Cruiser in the drive going forward. Congrats on your first outting and hope this past summer has yield many more adventures.

Sorry to hear about your father. If you want to try sleeping in it while camping, I'd look into suv tents. I like sleeping in the rig, dry and off the ground, but still having fresh air and a place to store everything too. For 10-20% the price of a rooftop tent.

Been looking into these tents as well. What brand is yours and would you happen to have any additional side or interior photos? Thx.
