Finally, I'm not sure I'd describe the 2L-TE as anemic, but it's certainly no bottle rocket. Mine is quite happy to sit at 100 on the highway, but the EGTs rise as quickly as the speed drops on hillls. It will be remarkably similar to your diesel VW. Off-road, though, the available torque feels limitless - if I'm not mistaken the engine is rated at 179 ft/lbs of torque.
I'm a fan of the 2L-TE, despite having to replace the cylinder head on mine. But I'm definitely in the minority on this board, and I respectfully defer to the collective expertise here. Still, there are some who knock the engine without having tried it. All I can say is it works for me!

The LD LJ78 on the other hand have a slightly different tail light that are not interchangeable with the HD for some reason. But...this is just third hand info and I could very well be wrong.

The issue doesn't seem to have been raised as much for the HZ series because they are less numerous.
