I've been looking hungrily @ the one on Mustang connection, but there must be some reason / price issue as to why it hasn't sold.

The HZJ77 has the same tail light issues as the LJ78, i.e. no DOT/SAE markings.

Finally, I'm not sure I'd describe the 2L-TE as anemic, but it's certainly no bottle rocket. Mine is quite happy to sit at 100 on the highway, but the EGTs rise as quickly as the speed drops on hillls. It will be remarkably similar to your diesel VW. Off-road, though, the available torque feels limitless - if I'm not mistaken the engine is rated at 179 ft/lbs of torque.

I'm a fan of the 2L-TE, despite having to replace the cylinder head on mine. But I'm definitely in the minority on this board, and I respectfully defer to the collective expertise here. Still, there are some who knock the engine without having tried it. All I can say is it works for me!

IRC, the HZJ77 has the same tail lights as the other HD 70 series and consequently have the correct DOT markings on them. The LD LJ78 on the other hand have a slightly different tail light that are not interchangeable with the HD for some reason. But...this is just third hand info and I could very well be wrong.

And loyalty can be a very funny thing. I mean, if you can look at an engine, know that it will blow a head at some point in its life, and still call it a great engine...then I'm not going to argue with that. Even the Ford Pinto has their own dedicated fan club. 179 lb/ft of torque is fairly small, but with the right gearing it would probably be just fine. I don't enjoy bogging down at the smallest of hills, and even my 13B-T will do that sometimes. Ideally, my BJ74 would have a 1HD-T like Rick D's...but that would be $$$ that I don't have, and really, in the grand scheme of things, I'm fairly happy with my underpowered 13B-T. At least I know it's not going to blow a head.

The body being absolutely identical, I would bet a lot on you very well being wrong
The issue doesn't seem to have been raised as much for the HZ series because they are less numerous.

Yup...just did a quick search, and I was wrong...the LJ78 and HZJ77 have the exact same tail lights. I got mixed up...it's the LJ71 that has the same tail lights as the BJ70 BJ74 etc. These pain killers are "killer" on my brain...feels like it's running in molasses.
