Tires installed "lettering in"

This thread has a bunch of conflicting opinions so I'll toss mine in as well.

My opinion.. the tire shop did it right.

Fact.. You will do no harm putting an under sized spare on either axle of a stock FJ62.

Add lockers/ limited slips / center locking differentials to the equasion and all bets are off.

Gotta go with black out.

This one time...when I was at band camp...
I bought some tires from costco. I specified black out -- they installed white lettering out. I made them move my rig to the front of the line -- they had 4 guys working on it -- 1 tire each to rush the job and turn the tire around.

When I say black out, I mean black out.

As for the spare, I think the guys are right in suggesting that you find a used 31 from a local tire shop.

.

Because both tires will be turning at different speeds?

If there were a LSD in the rear axle then it would be BETTER, not worse

black out always.....wait what are we talking about?

can't believe david didn't post up on this one...right up his alley

Just got new tires on my 60 today also. Went black out, it was pretty much a no-brainer. Got BFG AT's for $110 a tire mounted, balanced, etc. 31X10.50X15

Ahh! But will they look good on my truck if the white is out, or black out , no wait I know white out and I'll paint my nuts black. Yea that's the ticket!

Its a differential back there, spider gears allow it to handle different speeds. (like when cornering)

A limited slip would be steaming hot in a few miles. I guess that's better if you're looking for an insurance claim.

Jeeps wear the letters out....

What does that tell ya??? :flipoff2:

Good lawd, I never expected this to qualify as a two page worthy topic!

I've decided to keep em black-out.

a) because I'm too lazy to go get 'em re-done
b) because they do look stealthier that way

After I get my brakes fixed, I'll pick up a used 31" for a spare. So, like, March.

What sort of tires did you wind up buying anyway, grrlscout?

I got these from Wal-Mart:

BFGoodrich Land Terrain
Size: 31X10.50R15RWL LAND
50k mi warranty
$87.36 ea + $9.76 ea for installation, road hazard, etc.

Keep us updated on how you like them. I've got a tired-assed set of BFG ATs on mine and love them. My rear pass tire has had a nail in it for the last three months and it hasn't lost any air. Gotta love that. Only issue is I get that bit of vibration at certian speeds now that they are worn out.

I keep eyeing a set of Dunlop Mud Terrains at Sam's for $90 a tire. They've got the BFG ATs for $110 a tire, but there's just something about the idea of those big mud tires on my old beater...and mud is about the only form of wheeling available to me anyway, for the most part...not to worried about wear, either. I've put 1500 miles on my truck since July, so, you know, it's not really a worry.

Actually, not true. :D She wanted to know if there was any technical reason why the lettering should be out (shw was concerned if they were directional tires, I guess--but those are either black on both sides or white on both sides, right?).

Shouldn't this be in 80's tech?

Damn. Need's 33's.

:flipoff2:

I had forgotten what 31's look like. I bet you'll get better milage than I do.
