gday all.

Im looking at tyres and rims today.
My HJ75 came with non standard 15inch rims with 265/70R15 tyres on it.
They look a bit puny, the speedo is off and clearance ain't exactly good.

Can someone please advise me how to read this label regarding recommended trye and rim sizes?
I'm guessing the 16 means 16inch Rim.
What does the 7.5, 5.5f refer to?

I'd say that the 5.5 refers to the stud spacing for your rims, 5.5 inches across hub stud to stud. This is a standard Toyota configuration, also is used on chev/Gmc( at least on older models) . As for the 7.5 I'm not to sure, tire height/width?

Joel.

I think that for 7.50-16-8PRLT:

7.50 is the section width in inches.

16 is the rim diameter in inches.

As for the rest, I'm not sure, but I have read (it may have been on this site!) that the aspect ratio is fixed at 92% of the section width wherever the width ends in 0 (as in 7.50). I do not know whether this is correct. Using this, however, with a width of 7.5 inches the sidewall height = 0.92 * 7.5 = 6.9 inches. This would give an overall diameter = 16 + (2 * 6.9) = 29.8 inches

In relation to "8PRLT", the "PR" means "Ply Rating" and the "LT" means "Light Truck". A ply rating of 8 is equivalent to load range D and load pressure of 65psi.

16x5.50F refers to the rim - 16" x 5.5" wide, and I suspect the "F" indicates a "split rim" (Flanged)

Your existing tires should be 10.5" wide x 29.5" OD +/-

The 7.50-16 should be 8" wide and about 32" tall - could be as small as 7.5" wide, and 31" tall.

That corresponds with what is on this Toyo site

The Bridgestone 235x85x16 LT D694 have brought my speedo to within 1% of the true speed

7.50x16 are replaced by 235/85r16. the old sizes were replace at least ten years ago with metric sizes.. just as in the 60's you bought a 6.50x15 then the went with alphabets like g78x15.

now all sizes are metric even tractor tires are changing over to metric sizing.

the first set of numbers are the rim size, 235/85rx16 are tipically 32 to 33 inches tall. If you want something wider us 265/75r16. 1/10 of an inch difference but fair bit wider.
If you want to keep your rims try to fit a 33/10.50x15 or 33/12.50x15 in the fenders.. but the 235/85rx16 will give you better fuel economy as they roll nice and easy. also narrower tires handle much better on gravel and better in snow.
I grew up in a tire shop, my father ran one for 39 years and I have been running one for about 13!

The 7.50x16 are still a different size, although they are very close. They are still sold worldwide and fitted to Landcruisers new.
Im guessing the 7.50x16 are more common in oz than the 235x85x16

i found me an infomative tyre gizmo on exploroz.com Tyre Size Calculator @ ExplorOz

it figures the 7.5R16 gives an outer diameter of 786.4mm or 30.9inches.

Rosco your 235/85 R16 gives an OD of 805.9mm or 31.7inches.

what is the maximum size tyre i can put on a standard setup HJ75 without fouling the wheel arches when off road?

Here are 235/85/16 tires on a stock 1998 HZJ70. No problems fitting at all. No rubbing.

I asked an engineer about the 7.50R16 tyre diameter, to see the maximum size tyres I can legally run on my troopy, he looked it up in some sort of book that has specs of Australian model cars, and I think it was 812mm.
