I'm about to get a new set of tires. My LTX's are starting to hydroplane, even thought they look like they have some tread left. I've searched all threads on tire size and have seen what fits and what people recommend. I was about to pull the trigger and buy a set of 305/70's or 285/75's; but I thought I'd check in one more time for opinions. I need tires that will work well on highway long distance; but will also work well on muddy trails, snow, and ice. Is this size too big if I never plan on installing a lift?

Thanks.

Mike

If you do a search on "tire size" you will find enough opinions to turn your brain into jelly.

Same with "lift".

Both those tire sizes work with the stock suspension.

BFG AT's are a great all-around tire, and they last a LONG time so if you get them, expect to have them for a while.

Bridgestone Revo AT's are really good tires as well, they have a more advanced tread design than the BFG's and have received many good reviews on this site.

Neither of those tires do particularly well in mud, but that's a trade-off you have to expect with an all-terrain tire as opposed to a mud-terrain. I know the BFG's pack up pretty fast and don't clean themselves hardly at all, I can't speak for the Revo's.

I have had both and both pick up and pack with mud equally. Im talking about deep thick mud, not something with a hard bottom. I agree with the choices though. Either BFG A/T or Dueler A/T Revo. The BFG comes with a 60000 mile warranty.

I did find a ton of opinions on tire brands when I searched, and what tire size would fit with stock suspension. It seemed everyone agreed to go with the big tires with stock suspension: "you'll be happy when you install your lift", etc. I will never install a lift because I travel in the city on a daily basis. There are only a few parking garages where I fit now. If I lift, I'll need a another vehicle to get to certain job cites. I also don't need a valet to modify my roofline! I've actually seen this happen. I have enough trouble with them jamming my parking brake all the time. I'm wondering if anyone has had issues with the largest size tires at stock height, or regretted purchasing them. If I go big, I'm getting Revo's in 285/75 or Kumho AT KL78 in 305/70. Anyone try these Kumho's? The reviews look good.

Thanks.

Mike

If you're worried about getting too tall, get your new tires in either the stock size or 265/75R16. These will not appreciably affect the hight of your vehicle.

I know the garage heights. I'll still fit with the bigger tires, but I can't go any higher.

if you lose the factory roof rack and get a set of yakima cross bars, you will end up with a useful roof rack and at least 1.5" of extra clearance.

what heights do the parking lots have in your town?

i work in a city and my truck runs on J springs and 285s. I know I am good up to 6' 7" clearance. I can't ever remember a parking lot that did not fit although i do have to watch my antenna height.

FWIW : I'm totally impressed w/ 285 Revo's . Put them on 1000 miles ago as I begin my trek cross country to UT from VaBch. Particularly impressed w/ their water shedding ability thru the Smokey Mountains this past weekend. Quiet too ! :grinpimp:

I think the shorter one that I've fit in was marked 6'6, and my antenna was hitting the beams. The other one tall enough is marked 6'8". That's about it, the rest are too short. I know the marked heights are not correct. I use the striped PVC pipe on the entrance to judge if I fit, and I've hit the pipe on all the rest.

I went ahead and ordered a set of Firestone Destination A/T's in 305/70. The reviews looked great, and it looks like they are little quiter than Revo's on the highway. Firestone has a "Buy & Try 30 Day Gaurantee". If I don't like them, I'll send them back. I'll let everyone know how they fit and drive once I get them mounted.

Thanks for the input!

Mike
