Hi there,
I'm needing to change out my tires soon and am thinking of going a size or two higher than the stock 235/75/15. Well, actually the stock size is HR78-15, but who knows what that is. :p

Anyway, I like this site for checking out the differences in tire sizes. Basically you punch in your stock size, punch in the sizes you're looking at and voila, it tells you all kinds of info such as what the differences you'll see on the speedo and all that.

The thing is, they warn that going anything over 3% of the stock size is a no-no. I'm looking at 30x9.5 or 31x10.5. Bear in mind that my stock HJ60 rims are 15x6, bone-stock suspension no lift (and actually maybe some sag, its so old, lol!).

So, in all your guys's experience, will there be a problem firstly with installing a 9.5 or 10.5 inch tire on a 6 inch rim? And secondly, should I be concerned with the 6.79% diameter difference between the stock setup and the 31s that I am hoping to get?

Your collective wisdom would be much appreciated, thanks!

Welcome to the world of the sagging stock 60!! You are going to be pretty limited in the upgrades if you are looking for a more aggressive tire. Tell us what you plan to do with yours; I.e. lift, wheeling, daily driver, engine swap, budget, etc that may affect your tire choices. Most here will tell you to go with the venerable BFG ALL-TERRIAN T/A which is available in both sizes you are looking at.

I am in the same boat as you but plan to run mine ragged in an effort to save for a 3" lift and new 16" wheels that will give me a better tire selection.

Thanks for responding!

Ok I don't plan to wheel aggressively and frankly I don't have the money for any kind of lift. I have been thinking of doing a 'simple' (read as 'cheap') lift like using hockey pucks for the body, and maybe get a set of inversion shackles, which I hear might get me another half inch?

Basically I just want to go off-road a little, washboard FSRs, go a little higher up the snowy mountain to get that elusive monster buck. No rock climbing, no serious mud and definitely no river crossings!!

So....I was thinking of 30 or 31 inch all terrains that can be used on wet roads and snow highway driving etc. I'm pretty sure I know WHICH tire I want. BUT the thinnest it comes in is 10.5. It DOES come in exactly the same size as what I have on now, which is 235-75-15. But since I'm changing tires now, I thought might as well go 31 inches!

So the question is, will the 31x10.5-15 fit my bone stock 60 without rubbing issues and safely as well? The stock 15 inch rim is 6 inches wide (15x6).

Regarding safety you should be fine with a 10.5 tire on your 6" wheel. I have 11.5's on my stock 60 wheels and they don't seem to be ballooning (an effect that a wide tire on a narrow wheel produces). Corporate tire shops won't mount say a 12.5 on our wheels due to this.
Hope this helps.

Wow! 11.5's! Never thought it could fit that wide of a tire on the stock 15 inch rims! When i called the shop, the guy was more worried about there not having enough room in the wheel well to accomodate the 10.5s. He said that some customers (not Landcruisers) installed a wider wheel and then came back when the tire rubbed at full lock or something. I was also concerned that they might rub the tied rod ends or something like that Great that it doesn't though.

How big do you reckon one can go on the stock 15x6s and stock suspension without rubbiing?

Before I installed my lift kit, I didn't notice any rubbing with the afore mentioned 11.5's. but, this was street driving, not offroading with the suspension flexed. My original leaf springs were quite sagging also. I say this because the 4" lift kit I bought ended up lifting the wagon 6"! If you were closer I would offer up my wheels and tires so you could try em out.

Gee, thanks for the offer Danny. I think I'm going to go with the 31.10.5s. Frankly, I prefer the look of a narrower tire, like say, a 9.5, but they don't come in the 31 size. Thanks again for your thoughts.

i run 32x11.5 on mine with no lift. I have no issue with rubbing on road or off roading. check out picks on profile to get a view. 31s should be fine

I have in mind to get the 31x10.5's and have read enough to not know what to do now. Did you end up getting them, did they go on stock wheels with no issues?

Hi Jason, I did not go with the 31s. In the end, economics dictated that I get the 235/75/15 General Grabber AT2s. I paid $119.99 per tire and after all the taxes/enviro fees etc were in, it came up to $559.96.
