You probably already know, but e-rated 10-ply tires are much stiffer than the stock passenger p-tires 4-ply.

So be ready for a harsher ride due to stiff sidewalls.

C-rated is like 6 ply and d-rated is like 8-ply. Of course, nowadays they use the load index to specify how strong the sidewalls are with regards to carrying weight.

I use e-rated for off-roading

Cooper AT3. That what we put on the Girlfriends GX460 in 10 ply because of some of the roads she has to go on, but I think the 4 -6ply would be good for you.

I personally don’t like KO2 anymore, I believe they where the standard at one time, but in the last 4 months I have seen two side walls blow out. Not sure how the first one was driven, saw it at a tire store, but the second one was a new JLUR with about 4000 miles on it doing the Dempster Highway in Canada and the side wall let loose.

@LaserNomad When you buy tires in an unconventional size, think about how easy it is to find a used replacement in case of an emergency.
Can's speak to that in the GX world, but I've subscribed to that philosophy for quite a while, and benefitted from it when I cut down tires 500 miles from home base... We'll see how it goes, drive back scheduled to commence next Friday noon...

New-to-us GX has fairly new Kumho's, no issues for all of 878 miles.
Well, except for a clogged A/C drain that Lexus of Lubbock was kind enough to help us with.

Our GX is in CA getting the conversions and additions. It is by no means finished. However, here it is lifted and 285 KO2 tires installed, last week. Shocks have some adjustment, We are thinking of dropping it down an inch or so. Runs and drives well the way is sits.

Sorry for being slightly off topic here but it is tire related :)

I am going to be dropping my GX off for tires next week [Cooper AT3].

When I drop the truck off should I turn the suspension off before I turn the keys in, or leave it alone for the tech to do?

It's been a while since I had air suspension, but it may reset when the truck is turned back on. I'd make sure the tech knows to turn it off before putting it on the lift.

As someone who has had grapplers and G2’s, i would lean toward the G2’s.

In my experience the grapplers were great in the beginning.
But as time went on and miles added up, the got louder and louder.
To the point of sounding like a MT tire.

Currently running G2’s with nearly 40k on em and their noise level is the same as the beginning and they handle great on the road.

Is there anything inherently wrong or stupid in replacing stock tires with the same size (265/65/17) but AT (like KO2 or similar)?

Not at all! For DD and occasional/moderate offroad, you don't need huge tires. Good AT's are a great compromise and very practical.

No, or bump them just a bit for a slightly larger tire. I swapped the wife's GX to 265/70's for a little extra tire underneath. I think the look is about perfect for her truck with stock height.

I'm also not buying into the E-rated tire club anymore. I just purchased my last set of those this year. Unless you are actually pulling a trailer, I feel they are unnecessary and drastically compromise ride quality. We just bumped the GX back to what would be a C-rated at3w for a far more enjoyable ride.

Amen, and +10000000. Can't wait any longer to change out the E's for C's....

Depends on the use for your tires. If it’s a DD and won’t see much dirt or tough terrain, a C will fit the bill. If you are going to work the truck hard then E’s are a very good insurance policy IMO. Will not run anything but E’s in my work rigs or trail rigs. Have experienced and seen far too many failures when using lesser rated tires.

That’s right. If you don’t plan to hit the medium to difficult tails and no heavy loads, go with P or C tires.

When I’m in the medium trails with rock gardens and tough uphill rutted roads, I’m glad I have e-rated tires in the front and d-rated in the rear. That’s how my rig came when I bought it.

You appreciate the equipment and maintenance you do to the rig when you are far away from a tow truck in some isolated spot. The tow truck can be expensive!
