So I bought a new truck [project] and have starting the age old process of worrying about tires... This truck will be used for mostly off road.

I'm sorta-kinda restricted to no bigger than the 235/85/16 (32" x 9") size. (can't afford to have driveline/suspension costs get out of control) Been doing some interwebs searchin' and its pretty cool how I've seen 4 posts referencing Yankee Toys as experts with Interco tires (both IROC and Trxus).

Been running KM2s the past 9 months on my FZJ80 and they are good off road but not wikked good. Honestly I thing the Duratracs on my UZJ100 are just as good.

So YT... gimme some feed-back: KM2s, TrXus, IROCs, or other for New England off roading?

What kind of off roading you planning on doing? 32's were big in the early 80's. You might want to try and squeeze 33-35's in there.

I'd love to go 255/85 or bigger but, on a RRC the wheel wells are VERY tight. The truck came with 2" lift (springs), which will allow full articulation and lock to lock w/ 235/85. Any tire sized bigger, and its like the monkey who pisses on the cash register...it quickly runs into money...

There are quite a few other upgrades I'm considering before I go nuts with big lift and revising the geometry of suspension. Most importantly a diesel swap...
But before then, I need new tires to pass inspection and to get out and play with the new (for me) platform

Would love some feed-back on the TrXus vs KM2s if people have any. Looks like supplies of IROC radials are pretty scarce :(

Cheers

IROCS

36" is the smallest bias IROK

go TSL bias ply. way better tire for new england slop IMO.

No IROKs <34" :(

I'll look into the TSL option, but in radial. Not partial to bias (But, can argue both sides of the bias vs radial discussion/debate...)

Anything bad about TrXus? Just found a new set of 5 for <$1K with shipping...

too bad you dont like Bias. I have a set of 5 bias ply 33" TSL's on allied beadlocks for sale.. in cambridge!

Pretty much depends what miles are put on the tires. IIRC the radial truxus' are pretty soft. Road miles will lessen your overall tire life. The BFG's hold up real well onroad and do well off road as well. If you are strictly wheelin it Interco is a better offroad specific tire. Since you mentioned diesel motor and small tire size/no lift it sounds like you are building more of an expo rig. In that case the BFG MT KM2 is a better all around bet. I put many miles on my KMs in mixed driving conditions on my 60and never had a problem. Also put 40 to 50 K on two different sets of AT's respectively (90% onroad) and never had a problem.

Cliffnotes- mixed driving- KM2's. strictly offroad- go TSL!!! (Or Truxus)

Oh boy... I am looking at TSL bias but for my Series III, but its in Miaimi.... Those would be a tough fit an an overhead compartment...

Off topic- what are you building?

Ding! Landtank wins another kilo of Costa Rica coffee :)

So I had such a fun and frantic time rebuilding the FZJ80 last spring and summer, thanks again Landtank, (which now resides in Costa Rica) I decided to take on another project truck this year.

Last week, I pick-up a 95 Range Rover Classic LWB from Cali, very low rust. It was too good a price to walk away from, guys is leaving town and it had to go. (I know....I know...like the Simpsons' episode with the trampoline...) Needs usual TLC for a near 20 year old truck, but I've wanted one for well, over 30 years...

  • The RRC will be used for 80% off road, adding 2" of lift and going to run 235/85/16. Looks like TrXus are one of the few Interco options in radial. If I like the platform I'm going to swap in a 300TDI next fall.
  • My UZJ100 will be 80% on road DD and has Duratracs
  • The FZJ80 has KM2 on it now, which are great for 50/50 on /off road, but I was a tad under whelmed with them once you add water to any surfaces. They packed fast in central american mud.

2014 project....? Perhaps a Fiat Panda :)

Thanks for all the input guys!

thank God! I was looking at the diminishing supply from the last gift and was swearing at you for even giving it to me in the first place.

I can solve that problem next Saturday if you are around.

Next problem.... Cannot find pizza cutter Trxus mail order. Anyone know local stocking retailers? Interco is saying at least a month for next production run... :/

I'll be around. Likely working on a Land Cruiser though.

My buddy had a 1987 RR that we went cross country in. He tried and failed to get me on board with buying one.
