I have been wanting to jump up a size in tire choice to 285/75/17 but tonight came across some Cooper Discoverer S/T MAXX LT285/70R17 for $200 ea. About $85 less than I see anywhere else online.

It's a heavier tire than the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT I am looking.

Do you think it is worth staying at the smaller size for what I think might be a much better tire for less money?

My opinion is get what you want and don't settle. In short time, you'll quickly forget the savings and wish you spent the money to get what you really wanted.

I'm a proponent of getting the biggest tire you're willing to fit. It's the best lift and suspension money can buy when it comes to off-roading.

+1 for buy what you want. The difference is Only $500. That’s nothing if you waste half a day of a trip on the side of the road.

I do agree that the Offroad carcass is a better choice if you’re going to start sending it. Also take a look at the new cooper mud offering the Evolution. Reputed to be hybrid quiet, 2 ply sidewall that approaches the 3 ply armortek (at least in press clippings) in strength, and much lighter weight.
