Hi Mark,

I assume you're referring to an FJ40 tire carrier. If I'm not mistaken, the FJ40's tire carrier supports itself from the truck's body. You have to keep in mind that the side panels of the pickup bed do not have real support to witstand lateral forces. When the tailgate is down, you can almost move the side panels by pushing them sideways.

I'd recommend something that is supported only by the bumper, which in turn is attached to the chassis. You may want to look at Stout Equipment or Slee for ideas. Here's one I really like:

Is Stout still in business? I thought they were no longger? I appologize if I am wrong.

The bumper does look great though!

I have one that mounts in my receiver, holds tire and hi lift, puul a pin and tire lays flat on the ground.....its for sale,no longer use it

Hi,

Thanks for the link for Slee. However, their tire carrier is made for the FJ 60 and FJ 62, not for pickups. I know its Saturday, but Im looking at options. I could pillage a tire carrier from a Dodge Ramcharger and put it upright in the bed area. I dont plan on using any tires larger than 31's on my truck, since its a daily driver and do not want to sacrifice fuel economy too much.

I just hate using the all of the pieces of the jack extensions to drop the tire.

Don't think you'll find one for the pickup. You might be able to adapt the 4Runner carrier from badlandbumpers.com. I have it on my 4Runner and like it. I'll probably make modifications to move it closer to the body, but I don't anticipate that being an issue.

The only design issue is the hing. It uses bushings, which definitely prevents squeaks, but the weight of the tire wallows out the bushing quickly. I'm going to replace with custom brass next Spring.
