So I noticed yesterday that my hood is basically covered in these tiny paint chips. This is a zoomed in picture and they are not really noticeable unless you look closely, but still you can see rust in the center of several of them. Basically hundreds of little pinholes.

I’m baffled at what could have caused this. Honestly it looks like some kind of acid sprayed up on the front of the vehicle at speed. This is on a 2016 LC.

Anybody have any ideas for the proper way to take care of this?

It might actually be tiny metal particles embedded in the paint, from other car brakes and such, especially if you've been doing a lot of highway driving. I was starting to see this on my '15 this summer, and with a white vehicle it's very noticeable. I used CarPro IronX iron remover and the spots disappeared, huge difference. You wash the car, then hose it down with this stuff and let it soak. It smells awful and turns purple as it works, but it really helped.

I had rust spots from brake dust on the back of my 2016. Using a cleaner wax (light compounding) took them off & paint looks new. I would start with compound/wax & see if that gets it

Actually now that I think about it, I clay bar’d it before the wax , and it was the clay that removed the rust

This exact issue was destroying my (now sold) 4runner hood randomly as soon as I moved near the coast. Never really figured out exactly what happened as I think it was just timing and was in motion regardless. But I know several Toyota owners with some years on them in my town that it is happening to as well as we speak. Will be watching my hood closely with this LC, but it has a 1/4 clear skin on it which I love.
