Help I'm totally confused.

My FSM (1st picture) says there should be 5 different size bolts to put the cover on ranging from 8mm in length to 25mm in length.

A picture that I got from my parts guy says there should be 3 different size bolts. Parts guy got me the bolts that correspond to numbers 1 and 2 in the parts picture (2nd picture) but says the #3 bolts are disco'd.

Help what the heck is going on here?

Make sure you are in the right section of the fsm: country/motor/model... I had three sizes: Two same diameter but diff lengths and one larger diameter, and I labelled the pic in my fsm with my own key corresponding to where/what size mine actually came off and cross referenced with fsm to make sure it was all good.

My FSM says 1981-1987 2F engine repair manual.

Pretty sure it's the correct one.

Also the trouble I'm running into is that 7 of the 12 bolts I took off looked like the picture below. Pretty sure they are not OEM. There was one hole that didn't even have a bolt in it.

But there are different 2f's..... IIRC in the specific section of the manual you are working in it will give instructions for say the us motor and the non us motor... Just trying to help. If they go back in wrong you will push the timing plate away from the block and forever be leaking... Look at Jim c's current thread, "how not to restore an fj40" , he just covered the timing plate and cover etc in his most recent set of pics with instructions on how to do it properly.

Yes, those are generic hardware store bolts.
There are M6 bolts and the 2 big M10 bolts at the bottom.

The M6 bolts have a phillips in the center of the hex, which makes install easier right against the cover.
They also have a captive lockwasher.

There are 4 bolts @ 8mmlong.
2bolts @ 12mm long.
4bolts @ 16mm long.

HTH

Ya no worries finnyfam wasn't trying to get huffy. Went back and double checked the manual I have (ordered it from toyota bunch of years ago) and there is definitely no differentiation between years. I know that if you are using a Haynes manual or something like that they pack a bunch of years onto the same page.

Come on where are the gurus?????!!!!!

that can explain the discrepancy between my FSM and the print out that the parts guys gave me? Should I operate under the assumption that there are only 3 different sized bolts (like the parts print out says) or should I assume my parts guy doesn't know what he's talking about and try and locate the 4 different sized bolts (8-25mm) that my FSM says I should have.

HELP:cheers:

HA I think Jim AKA the GURU responded as soon as I hit the "post" button!!

Jim, I should know this but can you explain what the M6 VS M10 is? It's seems like it would be diameter but want to make sure.

Just Wikipedia'd bolts/M6 and now know everything I need to know. Thanks Jim. Hopefully this helps some folks in the future.

Yes, 6mm dia vs the 2 larger 10mmx25mm long bottom bolts.

Edit: And if it wasn't clear earlier, it is CRITICAL to have the correct length bolts in the correct holes. do not proceed without having all the correct fasteners ready to go in.

Cool. Glad Jim hopped in and squared it away. I have been printing fsm pages as needed and also using a haynes book. And I think you're right, I was prob writing in my Haynes book as I removed mine and not on the fsm. Cheers!

My parts guys are telling me that some of the bolts for the timing cover are disco'd.

I'm gonna call Cruiser Dan tomorrow and see if he can get em'.

Tried to find them on McMaster-Carr website unsuccessfully.

Fastenal maybe.

NHTOYOTATECH, PM sent. Not sure what you mean by a blown up 3. If you mean a blown up 3F I'm not sure the bolts are the same.

If anyone else could chime in that knows for sure that would be awesome. I don't have a 62' FSM.
