Timing Belt replacement signs?

FWIW, the tech at the lexus dealer in Tucson said they recommend the t-belt on the LX be changed at 105K since the 2UZ is easy on the belt while on the lexus V6 engines, they recommend 75K mi, saying that engine is hard on the belt from what they've seen. I'm sure the belt will go well over 90K mi, but how much, who knows? 90K mi I think is the global recommendation taking into account a variety of environmental conditions. Anyone know what the interval is in S. Africa or the Middle East?

Personally, I'd just get it placed at 90K or close to it...no point on worrying if it's gonna break or not after that, and if it did, you'd feel like a chump. I remember reading this story about a guy with a 1st gen 4runner (22re w/ timing chain). Well, his timing chain started making that famous rattle signifying it was time to change it, but he pushed it one more month, trying to squeeze a few more miles out of it. Low and behold, the t-chain sawed through some coolant lines in the head...cost him a pretty penny to get everything fixed.

hijack?

Not to hijack the thread, but my wife took her '04 in today for the 60K service. They told her that she should change the t-belt, not for mileage but because of the age. Is this legit? Has anyone ever seen or heard of a belt drying out and failing in six years? Or are they exaggerating the possibility of failure for the extra business. Thanks.

I would not think an 04 would need a new tbelt.

Also, did we ever determine whether then engine is interference. I've been repeatedly told that my 100 series is non-intereference and my gs430 is interference.

For an 04 Toyota says 90,000 miles or 108 months (nine years).

Yes, interference. It's in the FSMs.
