So today I started changing the timing belt and putting a new water pump with a mate. But have screwed up royally. I had turned the crankshaft a few times and lined up the markings, on the camgear and injection pump. I took the tensioner off, then this is where we ****ed up. So I was about to start taking the cover off so I could lock the camgear with a wrench so I my mate could take it off, but he said he could get it off without taking the cover off and locking the gear. But he was wrong, and whilst trying to loosen the gear all he achieved was turning the gear counter clockwise which misaligned the markings. So he turned it clockwise and aligned the marks again. Then proceeded to turn the crankshaft again, it turned about half a turn then stopped abruptly and wouldn't go any further. The injector pump pulley turned while turning the crankshaft but the camgear didn't move. So now the whole thing is out of time... What the hell do I do now?

cheers

Why did he turn the crankshaft once it was all aligned up? I'm assuming the belt was off now, the piston is probably up against the valve which is why its not moving, but I am confused why you don't get all the marks lined up, do the work, get the belt back on and all should be good.

I'm not sure. That's the thing though, how do I line the marks up properly again? I have the rocker cover off, so I can lock the cam this time when taking the cam gear off. But how do I line them both up to the way they were? The injector pump gear is about 90 degrees right from the mark and the cam gear is on the mark and I cant turn the crank because of the piston being up against the valve. Sorry man I'm a noob at this stuff, cheers for the reply.

Can you turn the engine backwards to un jam it ?. Are you working from the manual? Download one from utorrent if you dont have one. Get all the marks aligned like in the cartoon. Tell your mate to stay at home.

Dont start it without turning the engine by hand a couple of full turns.

Hey mate, thanks for the advice. This morning I turned the crank back until the injector gear was aligned again, then after a lot of ****ing around I managed to line up the crank, cam gear and injector gear back in line. Then yes, I chucked the belt and idler pulley back on and did two full turns and the marks are still lined up, and didn't hit anything. I got one more question, what is the torque spec for the valve cover bolts?

Cheers

Finger tight and half a turn. I think it's 7-8 ft/lbs . Most important to be equal

It's amazing how a nights sleep can make it all look easier
