So I take the 99 in for a Timing Belt at 90172 miles. Get a call that the serpentine belt needs replacing. Okay. Then I get a call that the Water Pump was leaking a bit of antifreeze. Another $300 bucks. No time to call CruiserDan for the part, so okay - fix it.

Then I told that the antifreeze had dripped onto the crankshaft seal and that this might be a problem, however the seal won't be available until Tuesday.

I told them to go ahead and fix everything WITHOUT the crankshaft seal.

Should I be concerned about that seal??

I am at 89K, I am doing t-belt, waterpump, tensioners, all belts.

I can't think that anti freeze would hurt a seal.........but maybe I am wrong

I would wonder if oil is leaking or not. Maybe a drive to the dealer to look over the situation would be a good thing. I too can not think if a bit of coolant will hurt the steel of the crank, anything is possiable, but I personally would go and look. good luck robbie

Thanks Robbie. The T-belt and waterpump was done at the dealership. There was no mention of oil leaking from the crank shaft seal, only that antifreeze had gotten on the seal.

Of course I was talking to the service rep, and I asked him to go back and ask the mechanic if this was a concern. The service rep came back and said that the mechanic didn't think there was a problem.

I didn't think that antifreeze was that corrosive that a bit on a seal would cause problems. I'll just keep my eyes on it.

It's really disappointing to hear that the water pump is leaking at 90kmi on a vehicle that cost over $50k. I thought Toyota was better than that, especially with the LC. Did you ever see any anti-freeze on your garage floor or driveway? It also appears that at $300, the dealer ripped you off for the new pump. A new pump retails for $131 plus $5 for the gasket and the labor to install as part of the timing belt job has been repeatedly reported as .25 or .5 hours. At $100/hr, that's $25-50 for labor. Anti-freeze won't damage the crank shaft seal but could, over time, corrode the crank surface where the seal runs causing an oil leak.

I think whether the water pump is leaking or not, at 90,000 miles I would replace it. It is not that much BUT if you do have to replace it later on it would cost a lot more. That is just my opinion, to get to the timing belt you have to remove the water pump anyways. You now have a spare water pump "just in case". Just my two cents.

The dealership could have taken me for a ride, but I have dealt a lot with this dealership in the past and if I did get taken for a ride, then I feel I owe them.

The master mechanic is a cruiserhead, and the shop on many occasions have quoted a cheaper price on work than some of the local shops and definitely the other Toyota dealerships in the area.

I know I could have gotten a better deal on the W.P. through Dan, but I can't go without the truck for a week waiting for the part to come in.

I never saw any antifreeze on the driveway, but then again the tech said it was only leaking slightly and not enough to make it to the ground.

Proactive vs Reactive

I can tell you this. I had mine replaced last year and after reading the posts on this page I was taken like you were. I was origionally quoted $350 and then when the dealer gave me the same sob story they gave you. They also said that it was a major job that they didn't anticipate. I went in to see what they were doing and they had my entire intake on the floor. They went crazy on the thing. They added the water pump story, which happened to be covered by an extended warranty.

After replacing the starter on my own there is no way I'll take it back for a timing belt at 200K. I'll do it myself, it can't be as hard as that starter was.

FWIW,just about every dual-overhead-cam engine uses water pump as 'idler pully' for cam belt.

I've always ( & told my kids too ) If doing cam belt, do water pump, do cam seals & crank seals...
extra 200ish bucks on top of 700 buck job...

If oil seal weeps, it can ruin cam belt; it's failure may trash engine...
As said 2 or 3 entries above, cam belt comes off to do water pump....oh, A-freeze is not good for the cam belt . . .
