our v8 is a noninterface engine on second thoyght most of toyota engine are. correct if i am wrong someone

This is what my local dealer told me too... However after researching this website further, most think it in fact IS an interference motor... I couldn't agree with Wasatch Jay more... It's not worth the risk to go that long, in my opinion...

Not "gettin' it" fellas...

If that timing belt had let go you would have had a very expensive repair on your hands.

Waiting to 200K+ miles to change a timing belt seems like the people who wait to buy new tires until the steel belts are showing.

That's right, and I was not suggesting that anyone go beyond the specified replacement period. It just happens that mine had gone WELL beyond that, so it provided an outlier example of what ONE TB setup looked like at 230K miles.

FWIW I'd been inspecting the belt periodically, using a fibreoptic borescope. I was quite confident that the belt was in good shape, with no sign of wear or damage to the aramid fibers that form the backbone of these belts. The condition of the belt when removed was entirely consistent with what I'd seen on these inspections. YMMV, etc..

As a follow up to this discussion, I just changed the TB on my 2000 LC. The PO said it had been done at 90K miles, but whether intentional or by error, the PO's claim was untrue.

In any event, I had it changed for the first time this weekend (at 167,500 miles), and I asked the tech to save it for me so I could inspect it. The following photos are what I found (the first two weren't really out of the ordinary and about what I'd expect of a TB of this age; however, the 3rd one made me thankful I'd had it changed immediately..........I don't know how "structural" that is, but it didn't look good to me!) Sorry the photos are a little overexposed

WOW!!! I gotta say, that's the worst looking one I've ever seen.......and with only 129,000 miles??? In what area do you live / drive?

Only other timing belt failure I know of personally was on a Mitsubishi Diamante with over 200k miles. It blew up and ruined the engine, much like our would if the belt broke while driving.
I would never wait that long either, but sounds like the OP had a close watch on it.

The original owner lived in Detroit area for the first 128,000 miles.
