Did these transfer cases come from the factory with Koyo bearings?

yes, they do. The kits usually contain Koyo bearings as well.

Thanks John. Guess that's not going to tell me if it's been apart before. Oh well, judging by the amount of grease and grime on the case, and how the grease matches the transmission really well, I'd say it's never been apart ;)

I pulled the front output shaft, bearing, and seal out this evening. In between the seal and the bearing there was a thin washer with multiple bent forward notches (oil slinger comes to mind). It's not shown, or mentioned of in my 84 service manual. Anyone know what this is? Spare parts?! This could possibly be my noise. If so, that's a pretty lame reason for a rebuild

I ran into the same thing with mine, some how the oil slinger was misplaced during dis assembly and when it turned up later I couldn't figure out for sure where it came from. As mentioned it was not in the manual but I did find it in the diagrams on Toyodiy.com. I never did put it back in and have never had an issue without it. I can't really see that being the source of your problem.

Oh and if you can spare the extra cash I would highly recommend you upgrade your input gear with one of these.

LANDCRUISER TRANSFER CASE MODIFIED INPUT GEAR 10/85-ON. - eBay Manual Transmission, Transmission, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 16-May-10 17:06:11 AEST)

Will spread the load over a much bigger area on your input shaft splines and extend the life. I got mine at 4wheelauto $$

I will be carrying those in the near future... my price will be a little more like $, whereas my competition is a little more like $$$.

Just another thing to check, is the pressed metal disc attached to the diff pinion flange,
If it gets pushed back off the pinion flange it will rattle at low speeds but not at high speeds.

I'd love one of those modified input gears (if it's affordable). I see 4wheelauto's is both the input gear and power take off drive gear in one, whereas that ebay link is just the input gear and spacer in one.

Radd Cruisers, what will you be carrying? Any ETA?

I finally managed to find some time to put the t-case mostly back together yesturday.

What do people use as a torque meter/gauge/wrench to check the bearing preload, and where's a good place to buy one in Canada? I haven't been able to find anything suitable (0-24 inch pounds or higher) at the cheaper places like Princess Auto, Canadian Tire, or Sears.

Found a beam style torque wrench from KD Tools with the range needed. Looks like it's the same one that Park Tools uses for their bicycle torque wrenches :)

Well, sorry to bring this lame thread back to the top, but I finally figured out where my noise was coming from. No it wasn't the t-case... but that was fun to rebuild anyway! :)

It's the front diff. Rear diff is also making noise, but not as much.

Put it on jack stands, 4H, in 3rd gear. Feathering the brakes, and also letting out on the clutch produced the noise. I used a stethoscope (aka wood stick) to isolate the noise.

Anyone want a BJ70?! ;)
