Tibetan Mastiff

As I was reading through Tofu's thread about his new dog I was reminded of these Tibetan Mastiff's that they have over in the Far East. These things are crazy looking. I have no idea what this website says about them, but if you flip around a little on it there are some pretty cool pics of these dogs. I've never seen one, but from what I've heard they are massive animals, and I think they are pretty cool. Check it out...

They're almost St. Bernards. They have very similar genetics to St. Bernards, Rottweilers and Bernese Mountain Dogs. Their coats are hell to keep up with.

They are smaller than Old English Mastiffs but larger than a bull mastiff(I believe).

They are a true survival type dog. They will eat, and survive, on wood for a good while. From what I have read they were bred to be a protector around the house and are very independent.

I think lunyou mistook a Tibetan Mastiff for an anteater going after termites. It's a pretty common mistake.

Elephants are also raised for their meat....on Elephant Ranches....in Tibet.

That pic does spark a memory about a show that featured those dogs. Apparently they have been used as security dogs in Russia. The show said that basically you would be insane to try and keep one as a pet.

Spending time in Hong Kong (2 years)...we had a friend who had a couple of Tibetan Mastifs...they were both pretty sweet. Massive dogs though. Maybe since they got theirs directly from China the genetics were probably top notch...he did say they were fiercely protective of the house.
