I've been looking for a clean, mostly stock example in the SE for about a month. Seems like I'm going to have to spend a premium to get to one before all the rest of you rabid people just snap them up hours after posting. Clearly, no details on this listing so it's opinion based on photos only:

The price offends my sensibilities, but my wife wants this bad and is tired of waiting/looking.

It looks pretty clean to me...seems to have all the right parts in the right places...couple of flags to take into consideration. I noticed the ‘snake blinders’ are missing from the rockers. Might want to investigate how the holes were filled, and if it was a result of rocker damage. Also noticed the odd placement of the light (or antenna mount) on the drivers rear quarter. What’s up with that?

Looks like it has had the suspension refreshed using OME components, which is a plus, saving you $2k down the road.

I’d also note that looking for a month might not be long enough. Took me 2 years to find the right 40 series. I basically have this exact 60 and I wouldn’t sell it for less than $15k so I don’t think the price is that unreasonable. At a certain point you might find one for closer to $10k, but then you’ll find yourself adding things and spending on PM, at which point you’ll realize you’ve exceeded your original budget (unless you turn the blinders on like most of us here).

Any time I buy a vehicle at or above this price, especially at a distance or at a dealer, I would spring for a full independent inspection, including a compression test. Most of the time it’s aboit $150, which is a small fraction of the purchase price (1% in your case). It’s a small price to pay for piece of mind.

Go drive the thing, tell them you wanted the original wheels. When they say they don’t have them, offer them $13k and see what happens. If it’s been for sale for a while, tread with caution.

You mentioned these vehicles getting snatched up...what most don’t realize is the best ones almost never make it to the classifieds section. Folks hunt them down in advance and they change hands via private messages and behind the scenes, without being published to the public in any form, sort of like a secret cruiser market.

I'd go over that thing quite carefully with a bondo finder.
Is that a California plate on the front in Pic #2?

@SEAWOLF is spot on with that post.

A month search for the right 60/62 is nothing. You can find yourself in a deep hole if you end up with the wrong one.

I think that thing is a scam. It keeps popping up on a few different Craigslist. Looks decent and a 5 speed if it isn't a scam. Interested to see if it pans out

Ahh, I didn't do due diligence and run a nationwide CL/photo search. I think I'm getting tired of looking.... this seems like the legit seller:

Or at least locates it in California and has info.

To be fair, I've been looking for an FJ60/62 since about October of 2018, but was in the process of selling a house, moving and dealing with the holidays. Watched lots of trucks sell, gone back and forth between the 60/62, 80, 100 and even 3rd gen 4runners (had a 97 T100, know that generation pretty well) and circled back to all those options as settling and not getting what we really want.

As for the buying process, yea I'm a proponent of PPI. Too many years as a mechanic (motorcycle) and finding all sorts of weirdness done by prior owners. At the same time, I'm way more tolerant of mechanical condition because of my experience. I hate cosmetics though, and the wife... she wants something "pretty" (can be faded/original paint, but rusty rockers and fenders ~ or that listing from Sat in Atlanta with the smushed front end, don't meet the standards). I know it tends to be cheaper to buy something with the work already done, though that takes away the joy (after cussing) of doing the work myself.

Guess I'll post a separate WTB thread and see if I might not get in on the networking/unlisted side. Been meaning to do that anyway.

If a 60/62 has been touched by TLC4X4, it's not going to be priced sub $15K. Especially if they put in an H55....think more in the $40-50K range.

The site you just linked to is simply a Classified Ad service. The rig is being shown there has the CA plates visible. That listing is possibly legit.

I am 100% certain that the CL Ad you posted in the first post is a scam.

I didn’t realize the H55 and low miles, not to mention the TLC4x4...CL post is certainly a scam.

your profile is locked down. Always happy to talk someone through my journey and possibly finding a deal some where.
I have found I enjoy the chase of a new car, but when you can only drive 4 cars 3 months of the year it gets old.
pm me and I can always walk you through.

Shameless hijack. This is mine. Not perfect but not 15k either.

Great advice in this thread.
It took me 2 years and lots of patience's that sometimes I don't have, to find my 60. Beware of crappy body work. I spent the money recently to have some body work done on my 60 professionally, who is also a friend that I trust. I documented through the whole process with lots of pics. I treated that whole process how I would want it documented if I were a buyer, nothing to hide. If you can find a low mile 60 like this one you posted and the body is done correctly and documented then jump. It is amazing how prices have gone through the roof and made these very cool vehicles unattainable for the folks that should really be driving them.
Here is an example of the pics I mentioned, I was missing a snake blinder so I just eliminated them and he properly filled the fastener holes. My point, the pics show all metal with 2 small areas repaired properly, nothing to hide and no bondo in place of proper metal.
Anybody that doesn't document similar to this may have something to hide.
My 2 cents.
