Should I drive the 60 10 hours

I am having a conundrum, I am taking the Fam down to florida next week for new years and want to drive the 60 down. Its about a 10 hour drive. Truck runs fine, I need to burp the radiator, other than that it should be good to go. Would you have any reservations? suggestions on items oh s*** items to bring?

Oil galley plug taken care of?

took a long trip to the outer banks once in a heby cheby (88 3/4 ton chevy 5.7l) and didnt stop for like 3-4 hours except for gas of course. Anyways I burnt an exhaust valve. Engine had around 120K on it. High octane gas could be used to burn cooler, possibly more mpg, less pinging but may not be worth the extra $$$. Just a consideration if you engine is a little tired as mine was.

I drove from Salt Lake City to Oklahoma City for Christmas back in 1998. It was single digit teperatures all the way, I drove straight through the night. The old 60 never missed a beat, that was with the four-speed, and yes, I drove 75 MPH. It was so cold that the baby's diaper wipes froze solid while sitting on the floor of the back seat by the heater. I had already tossed the smog junk and gutted the smog pump.

Oil galley plug not done- but the motor has only about 15k orginal miles. Its the accessories I am concerned about.... Great story D'animal just read the whole thing- I have a SOR Smog replacement pulley ;)

Check your power steering pump. Leaks from that are usually lead to a smog pump failure so having that leak free confirmed should give you peace of mind on that side of the engine. Then it's just the alternator which shouldn't bugger out.

Well looks like it is a done deal- the 60 is riding out next week.

My power steering pump has a bit of a leak. What are common causes of it leaking? I haven't gotten a chance to tear into it yet.

If she starts to run hot make sure you turn the front and rear heaters on high so you burn everyone out of the rig while helping to bring the temp down.
Happened to me on a trip to Roanoke, Va.
We got there on our own power though.:hillbilly:

And that is what counts. I am not sure what I was trying to say when I made the title to this thread. I put my spare alternator on with a new fusible link and finally I have a consistent 13.5-14 volts- on thecrappy stock gauge- my aftermarket guage reads 12.9 at idle and 14.5 underway. Although I finally got an exhaust manifold leak. Is it time for headers or should I just get another gasket?

It is a slight leak that I will address when I get back- I just got done burping the radiator- what I thought was full took almost 1/4 gallon of anitfreeze. Do you think it is just a gasket on the manifold and that is that?

A laptop computer or list of motels that have 'em . . .

If you run amuck in Flah Rah Dah , dahlink, give us a yodell...we're everywhere...

Pic? Whereabouts is it leaking?

The leak seems to be by the front of the manifold- I can feel the air coming out- but maybe I am crazy. I tend to overlisten for issues.
