This gets me thinking about that SPOT beacon...

West Marine had them on sale earlier this fall and I picked one up to keep in the LC for those 'just in case moments'.

And when I'm solo it allows me a reliable way to keep the wifeski and family relieved with e-mail messages and my track.

I've got one. I like having it, but I think the family likes me having it more. The tracking feature is cool (Even though it's an added service charge), but on my last two week hunt both my wife and my father were able to check my daily progress.

Dan, how well does the texting feature work?

With the Spot II you can pre-select the actual text you want to send and you get two (or is it three?) custom texts. You can't adhoc entry in the field...but it works fine for me.

I've been using one for years. I really like it, and the new model takes some of the gripes I have away about being able to locate yourself and tailor messages. I almost sent my "rescuers" into a bad situation and ended up canceling a help call and hiking out the 6 miles of mud.

I put one on my mustang just in case I get thrown and nobody else I'm riding with can catch him. Reminds me of that story of the horse with nice saddle and gun that was wandering riderless all over by Lovelock several years ago.

I make my dad take it with him as he likes to bowhunt alone (well, ok, I can't be there every time he goes since I still have a job). It gives me a lot of peace of mind, but unfortunately DO NOT RELY ON 911 SERVICES. They will at least know where to find your body, however. I have first hand knowledge of Elko County S&R balking at hiking up a hill for lack of "support". (total jerks IMO) I'm not sure that the victim was savable at that time, but there was a definite LACK of urgency. They claim because they didn't have "updated" information that they were going to wait for a whole crew of people to show up and form a search party.

Still better than nothing.

Same experience with balky S&R by a good buddy of mine who found another hunter that had a mild heart attack up in the Clans apart of sheep hunting in '09. Guy died on the mountain in my buddies arms...S&R was more in the way than anything else.

BTW, it also allows the wife to track you even if you don't want her to....

Can't use the ol' "no cell coverage honey" excuse.

I don't care if she knows where I am. :meh:
I've thought of getting an APRS radio so she could track my trips when she wasn't along. Counting her there are a total of one people who would notice if I went missing for a week.

I think all of us would notice if you weren't around Dan...

I saw a thing on Google maps where it has some guy in Arizona on APRS. I think he goes wheeling, as his track goes into some distance off the beaten path.
