I would love to take the family and 2 puppies up to my old stomping grounds, Humboldt County. I have been gone for a long time and really would love to camp up there again.

I was thinking a couple nights at Gold Bluffs Beach..........I believe the dogs can be on the beach there.

Any other suggestions? Good secluded areas? Where can I drive on the beach, or where is it still allowed?

I want to drive out through Ferndale, along the Lost Coast and out through Petrolia, then down to Mendocino for some more camping.

I have no idea where any of those places are, but after SNT, my friends decided that camping on the beach is the best. So I think I'm going to be doing a lot more of that.

So I'll have to check those places you mentioned.

Mad river has beach access in arcata, and moonstone just north of arcata near mckinnleyville. Up north from there you got gold bluffs beach (dogs were allowed as of 2000) and you pass fern gully along the way. Further down south near petrolia youve got the lost cove, black sands beach access. and the eel river has some great trail riding if the water is down far enough. beautiful scenery there, i miss it all the time!!! there are some great light wheeling two track trails through the lost coast area. Eel river 4x4 club may be able to point you to some others and skillet just posted about his travels close to this very area. good luck.

I have camped on Gold Bluffs beach a few times. Pretty awesome place and a lot of room for the pups to run.

I also want to go out through Petrolia, the wife has never been there. I love it, great exploring.

There were other places we used to drive on the sand in my buddies FJ60.............but that was 88-90 so I imagine a lot has changed.

 Nice write up. Can you camp at Usal beach?

You sure can. As a matter of fact, it is wide open right now. You can go out and camp right on the beach or down by Usal Creek lagoon.

Or, if you desire, you can go back up in the trees and camp. Kinda damp up there though.

Usal Road in from the south is maintained throughout the winter but coming down from the north you may be too late. Long, lonely ride.

If you go around the other side, be sure to check out Needle Rock and Bear Harbor, you can rent an old barn there on the cliff to camp in for just $20 per night.

Let me know if you want any more details.
