We had a group of folks from Arctic Trucks in Iceland pass through town the other day. They are half way through a double crossing of the continent this season. Started at Union Glacier, and drove to McMurdo, and now they are heading back. They are supporting a publicity stunt for Hundai, so look out for some new Santa Fe commercials from Antarctica at some point...

I got to talk with the guys for a while and they let me drive one of the Hilux'! (About 3 feet..... But nontheless!)

Trucks are running 4.88's, stock front end, rear is a Hilux axle with a Cruiser 9.5 diff stuffed into it, and the mid axle is out of a Swiss military version of a G-Wagon I think they said.

Enjoy!

Crazy!

Ummm, so they are using Toyota's to support Hayundai? Who would they call if all their rigs broke down? AAA+Antarctica?

My face is pretty big.... I eat too much...

The Arctic Trucks are operating out of Union Glacier Camp, which is a privately run camp on the far side of the continent. I would imagine that if the Hyundai needed parts they would be flown down from South America, and then flown out to where ever the thing was broke down... It is like AAA but it may take weeks to get the help you need... It's a harsh continent. :D
