Only got to spend a couple hours on the LC today... Appears that regular maintenance was kept up at one point... who knows when it stops when the truck has 305k on it... pretty stock most everything is where it should be with the proper hold downs & clamps, serp belt looks new... hoses & heater T's look recent... got the fan/radiator & air box out, went under and got the pans off exhaust manifold bolts off (none broke) flex plate and motor mounts and motor to trans bolts out... plus other misc bolts & brackets... everything on the bottom is done... spent some time looking and everything looks intact... no rust (Texas truck) not even much mud... exhaust looks good... the rack looks to be leaking some... and THAT is my question... if I'm going to replace it... now seems to be the time with the engine out... the rebuilt units on ebay are about $250... I'm not looking to make this a money pit but... what else while I'm at it... oh yeah i think the super charger is going to be up for sale... I'll never use it and might as well put the cash into this... came off a 2003 tundra...

What was wrong with the original engine besides the high miles?

It might save you a bit of time and aggravation to do the rack with the engine out but its still not too bad with the engine in.

I would check the exhaust manifolds for cracks and check the motor mounts while you have the motor out.

You can probably assess any maintenance or performance items that would be advantageous to do with the motor out (like the heater T fittings), but it looks like your already on top of that. Good Luck.

I'd do the timing belt and all the add-ons (tensioner, idlers, etc). Maybe a fresh starter while you have it out. The rack isn't too bad with the engine installed.

Thanks... I got this non running... was told it had a broken ring.. but who knows... seems to have no compression... and since I just put the motor in my wifes LX470 (2001) 3 weeks ago and it was so simple I figured why not do it again... I have owned hers for 12 years and she still says there is nothing she'd rather have... the engine thats going in has 111k miles out of a 2003 4runner... I've seen so much on here about the rack & pinion that it made me look and I did see some fluid on the drivers side...
thanks for the input

What happened to the original engine to cause a failure in your wife's 100?

the whole top of the radiator split going down the interstate... actually was mid point on the mississippi river bridge from TN to Arkansas... never showed hot just lost power and quit then zero compression.. 172k miles... Glad it was me drive'n or I would have "assumed" it showed hot and she kept driving... slipped it into neutral and made it to the arkansas side...

Wow that's terrible. I wonder if the thermostat failed and caused pressure. On the bright side, sounds like you have the skills to do a relatively cheap swap and can probably make some good money if you can find cheap 100s with bad engines.

Use brand new engine mounts. You'll have less vibration for years to come. Rubber weakens over time.

Maybe open up and check the starter contacts.
