so my 60 always operates right in the middle of the temp gauge. the last week i have been working nights and i get off normally around 230and its cold outside. so i get off and by the time i get to the freeway my temp gauge is halfway. get on the freeway and after a 30 mile drive it says its cold and i mean all the way down almost. thought it was a sensor problem, but my heater tells me otherwise because the hot air is about half what it is driving through town. almost useless.
any ideas? im thinking just change the thermostat

If your engines at temp and your blowing cold air...I'd say you got a plug somewhere. Have you flushed your cooling system recently?

thats just it its not at temp i dont think. when im doing 50+ the motor starts gettng cold frm the cold air. maybe i dont have enough coolany/antifreeze eh. i dont know

Spooky... that happened to me. I had the system flushed... perfect. Bleed the system and burped...perfect. Did a routine oil change and when I filled it back up had no oil pressure. Then remembered that when it started getting cold my pressure started to fluctuate a bit. So took off dizzy and manually turned the pump and nada.
Conclusion: pump was good enough to pump when it was primed but was not strong enough to prime itself. Lucky I found out the way i did.
Solution: Dropped the pan, replaced the pump, and pan gasket and WOW. Constant oil pressure and... guess what??? normal operating temp in about 2 minutes of idling.
Happy ending considering how many "professional" mechanics told me that my engine was just old and that was the way it was. :flipoff2:

oil pump? wow. but i have no problem getting to operating temperature in town or idling just when im on the freeway. it actually goes down. are you saying it could be the same thing? if so its worth a look

is there a problem with my temp gauge? cause it says that im running cold no matter if im on the highway or if im on town. i already check my temp gauge with a mechanic and it's working good. in fact last week i loose a hose and the temp gauge indicates the overheating.

and sometimes the temp goes up depending on the situation so the temp gauge is working.

i forgot to say that the temperature here in my city is about 32ºC so is weird to see the temp gauge indicating that my 60 it's running cold.

sorry about my english :frown:

Hi - first post but thought I'd pass on my cold cruiser story.

My 60 wouldn't heat up when I got it a few months ago. The temp gauge would barely move at all, in town or on the highway. The only time the gauge would move was after shutting the engine off after it had been running for awhile. I'd start it back up and the temp would go about 2/3 of the way up, but then come down to almost nothing after a few minutes. This was in June in New Mexico - 90F sort of weather.

I replaced the thermostat and discovered the gasket inside the t-stat housing was missing. Once the new thermostat (and gasket) were installed, the engine would heat up to about 1/3 on the gauge. The engine runs much better too. My guess is that without the internal gasket, coolant ran right past the thermostat whether it was open or not.

Thermostat is cheap and easy to do, so I'd suggest starting there.

that's exactly the same problem that i have but i'm completely sure that my thermostat is working pretty good

You're SURE your thermostat is working? Are you sure a piece of crud isn't stuck in the 'stat holding it open?

I changed out three thermostats in the process of trying to diagnose my under heating problem. Not the thermostats. The only thing I can think of is that the oil pump, while circulating enough oil to lube it up, was not circulating enough oil to transfer heat properly.

Regarding what you said about it getting to temp then going down... I am not sure. I would watch you oil pressure closely and if it begins to fluctuate I would change the pump. It's a 70$ job that is easy. Mine temp would fluctuate at first then one morning it just stopped getting above the first line and that's where it would stop. I then bought an infrared temp senser and started shooting parts and the heater hose at the radiator was about 180 and the block was cooler in some areas and hotter in others. At the time I had no idea what that all meant. Hind sight being what it is oil was not being circulated properly.

 so im driving home and it hits me. im an idiot. it is the thermostat. its stuck open all the time. has to be. thats why its long to heat up and not staying hot on the freeway on cold nights. it doesnt close when it needs to so it can stay at operating temp.
thanks all. im buying a new one in the morning

As mentioned before - make sure you have both the paper gasket and the rubber upper seal when replacing the 'stat.

the seal!! thanks for reminding me
