I wasn't aware that the telescoping steering column was a weak point; however, I hope this means there's a solution, because mine is inoperative too. My tilt works fine, but the tele doesn't move. I performed a search using several words, but no results.

Is there a "reasonable" "affordable" solution to a tele column that refuses to come closer to me? (oh, sorry, the ABC Sex poll is on the TV right now.............)

well, all I know is that I had asked about what to take care of before the warranty expired and that came up. Went to check and sure enough ours was dead too... sheesh...

Brought it to the dealer and it was a big ado, they had to order various parts, it took forever to get them, and was generally a pain. So as far as "affordable" it doesn't look good if you end up having to go to the dealer outside of warranty....

E i know that you are about 40 min from me , dnp im in LA , there has been 7 revisions on the tilt/tele motors since 98 ,The concerns have been noise , and lack of movement, the motors are not that hard to change ,,, the tele one has 2 bolts and falls in your lap ,if you have a extended warr they will still cover this untill 100k . I have a few motors stashed from the prototypes that we were installing if you git in a bind pm me , as for the noise on tele( in-n -out) the latest revision uses a mini driveshaft instead of the small speedometer wire and has had great sucess in reducing noise ( that annoying squeel ) when you put in the key, combo that with the lube of the shaft and problem solved,,, as for the inop some out of warranty ones have been jarred into working again (yea not perminateley) by applying pressure in or out on the wheel while using the swich to command it to move and occasionally hiting it really hard , it will free up the motor to live again for a time,
hope it helps !!!

Thanks for the info so far. One thing that I didn't make clear is that, I can hear the tele motor running (both wile in the automatic function and when I move the switch). The problem is that there's no movement associated with the motor function.

I'm fairly adept at mechanical issues, but I thought I'd check to see if this is an issue I should look into myself or one that's better left to an "experienced" stealership.

Any thoughts on what may be at fault in keeping the motor from moving the column?

the mechanical portion is simple ,, look in the column hole and see if you can see the shaft spin when you hear the opperation sound --------- no movement = bad motor---------movement = bad shaft or stripped flex joint

I know you can have the dealer disable the automatic movement of the steering column that occurs when you get in and out of the vehicle, while still being able to operate it manually. Should prolong the life of the components.
