The CSR is a bit of a highway these days versus when I did it some 20 years ago. Plan to take a couple of weeks+ to do it so you can explore some of the neater spots (Durba springs etc) and to check the various wells. Read Canning's journal to get into the 'spirit' of things. Nipping out to Rudall River is worth it, though I guess it's probably a bit more 'busy' now than back then.

Gibb River road is just a gravel road, but there's some neat places (water holes/water falls etc) to explore off the road. Hitting the Mitchell falls is worth it, though a bit depressing that it's become touristy with helicopter rides etc (from what I read). Was up there 3 times in 1982 and 1986 and 1989 and was still an Amex exploration camp in 1982 and quite isolated with a caretaker that was very friendly and gave us permission to shoot the local (wild) beef if we wanted some steaks :)

cheers,
george.

Interesting info, thanks George.

Yeah I think the golden age of remote outback travel is over unfortunately, with the technological advances in the last decade like digital mapping, sat phones etc it makes these sort of trips a lot more viable for the everyday Joe, tourist or Grey Nomad type traveler to head to these remote spots than the true adventurous types.

I did the Holland Track with a mate a fortnight ago for the first time, I was expecting to see a handful of cars over the weekend but we must have passed over 50, it's not like there is a whole lot out there either.

On one hand it is a shame these area's have now become touristy destinations with "glamping" and helicopter rides etc, but on the other, I would rather see 100 tourists out there than 1 more mine.

Cheers
Dan
