I'm worried about a prolonged grid down emergency. No water being available, or no service teams able to get what water there is, to where it is needed.

Extremely short notice, but since I'm not motor-housin' up, and rather, making a day-trip out of it, thought I'd invite folks all up in here... Heading to AOP tomorrow morning. Not sure when. Prolly gone take the dog, meet some folks up there, hang out, wheel, look at the foilage, look at the broken boggers.
Never been to AOP, but it's 2.5 hours from Hoover and All Innerstate.
It appears there's trails from mild-to-wild there. So if anyone wants to drive their junk and only has one day... this is the time!

what kind of car seat did you use?

I dont know if we want to start with a convertible, or buy an infant specific. Im leaning towards one I found that is a rear facing infant, that will hold her until 3 years old or 35lbs.
our plan is to have another child within 3 years, so by the time she is outgrowing that first one it'll be time for a booster seat, and we can put #2 in the first seat and get the full life expectancy out of that seat. (many reports say child seats should be discarded after 5 years, or one accident)

Start with infant specific, that way you can pull the whole seat while she is sleeping and take it with you. With a convertible you will have to take unbuckle her, take her out, and inevitably wake her up.(The rule is true, don't wake a sleeping baby.)

All car seats are rated to be extremely safe, buy the one with the features you want that works best for you and seems comfortable(increasingly more important as they get older). Check them in the store and find out how easy they are to buckle and unbuckle one handed at a weird angle, how comfortable the handle is with some weight in it draped over your forearm and make sure it works with any strollers or other things you might want to snap it into.

The most important thing about it is to make sure it is tight enough. If you think it is tight enough, it isn't. You have to push down with your knee and pull until it is so tight that there is virtually no lateral movement. Eric M. taught me how to do it and said that at the fire station they will put the seat in the base and yank it side to side as hard as they can to make sure it is tight - that is what will happen with it in a rollover so make sure it is tight.
 
I didn't answer your question. We used a Graco Snugride -> Evenflo Triumph -> Graco Nautilus

We bought two triumps and three Nautilus before we were done. Infant car seat can be swapped car to car with multiple bases. Everything else you will need a car seat for each car. If you are installing it properly you won't want to move it more than necessary.
 
We used the graco seats when they were babies and then went to britax when they hit toddler height and weight. Now they are back in graco boosters. If you know the history of the car seat it can be used without worry, 5 years is the point were plastic will stay deteriorating in direct sunlight, ie 5 years in the desert no night. Matt summed up entering wise nicely though
 
Have a 9 month old daughter about to be 10 months in the Graco snugride as well. Have not had any issues at all and easy to fit in all the cars pretty quick.(we also bought an extra base) If you can wait a couple months you can have it.( i know there are experation dates on these but surely less than a year you are good. ) At first we were kinda upset that the snugride wouldnt face forward, however looking into it glad we went that route. We got the combo snugride and stroller. My wife told me what i am supposed to go buy for front facing but i cant remember.

if you are done with it by January I think I would want to come get it from you, yall bought it new, no accidents?

I think we will do rear facing until 3, but I like what Matt said about being able to take the carrier out, and the convertibles I'm looking at can start rear facing, then go forward.
 
yes brand new. no accidents at all . It is black and grey. If you have a girl let me know I'm sure i will have plenty of Pink s*** and Auburn clothes. And congratulations!!

I'm not going to lie, I'm scared. I don't know anything about girls. I hope she's half as cool as baby baby jynx, she's a trooper.

Be scared, very scared.

You should be scared because there is no way to prepare for what is about to hit. Everything, every single word, letter, and punctuation mark, that has ever been written about babies applies to every other baby in the world except yours. There is no video you can watch that will help, there is no website that will help, there is no app that will help, there is no magazine article that will help, there is no book that will help.

Be scared.

Friends and relatives will give useless advice.

Pile on the scaredness.

At the hospital your wife will be treated like a queen, you'll just be in the way. After the baby comes the staff will continue to treat her well. After the pandemonium passes the staff will likely be nice to you. The hospital should provide some good food. Now comes the time to leave the hospital. The nurses will be all "ooohhh" and "aaahhh" what a sweet baby. Then they'll wheel your wife to the curb while you go pick up the vehicle. Once she and the baby are seated in the car the hospital cuts all ties and YOU ARE NOW ON YOUR OWN. NO SAFETY NET. And the fear will really take hold.

Just wait until it's time to change that first diaper :lol:. Will you ever be lost :lol:. What surprise awaits?:hmm:

The first two years will be a sea of diapers. You'll be pissed on, crapped on, barfed on, spit on.

Yes you should be scared.
