This snake is a, are you ready for this, a brown snake, no joke, also known as dekay's snake Storeria dekayi. Absolutely harmless and seldom grows to be much longer than a foot.

Thanks Jim, I went home at lunch to check him out and he looked harmless to me. Sarah's cousin was visiting and they live by Ruffner Mtn. so I sent him along with her in a shoe box to take him over there since the kids didn't want him hanging out by the playhouse.
